Multiple fuel storage tank monitoring systems across the United States have come under attack from hackers believed to be operating from Iran, according to a CNN report drawing on several informed sources.

The automatic tank gauge systems, which were accessible online without password protection, allowed intruders to alter the displayed readings. However, they could not modify actual fuel quantities, and no physical damage or injuries resulted from the incidents.

Nevertheless, experts note that such access could enable a hacker to disable leak detection mechanisms, potentially leading to undetected environmental hazards.

Given Iran's previous focus on these ATG systems, it emerges as the primary suspect. Yet, intelligence sources cautioned that the perpetrators left scant traces, complicating efforts to confirm their identity.

Iranian cyber groups have previously disrupted various US infrastructure networks connected to oil, gas, and water facilities. Many operators have failed to implement adequate security measures for their online systems.

Previous Cyber Incidents Prompt Calls for Better Protection

Both cybersecurity specialists and government agencies have urged infrastructure operators to enhance their defenses.

Back in 2015, simulated ATG setups placed online attracted attention from a pro-Iranian hacking collective. Internal IRGC documents from 2021, as reported by Sky News, highlighted ATGs as viable targets for cyberattacks.

Following the events of October 7, hackers linked to the IRGC compromised US water utilities and posted anti-Israel messages on pressure management equipment.

Since the onset of hostilities, Iran-affiliated actors have triggered interruptions at American oil, gas, and water installations, as well as delaying operations at medical device manufacturer Stryker.

The regime-supported Handala group released private emails belonging to FBI Director Kash Patel.

Still, Handala tends to exaggerate its feats. After the Patel email leak, the group asserted penetration of FBI networks, but the breach was limited to an outdated Gmail account, per CNN.

Handala has also directed actions against Israeli officials and IDF personnel.

Recently, the group released a roster of around 60 individuals claimed to be senior Egoz unit officers, though analysis suggests they were mostly veterans and reservists with public social media profiles indicating no higher ranks.

Similar disclosures targeted Maglan unit members and US military personnel, including Navy officers and Marines in the region.
