Suspect detained following fatal shooting at Delaware hospital

A 23-year-old man was taken into custody in Philadelphia after killing one person and injuring another during a targeted shooting at a hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.

Authorities have detained a suspect after a deadly shooting took place at a hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, with officials providing confirmation on Tuesday evening.

The 23-year-old male fatally shot one individual and injured a second during the early afternoon hours on Tuesday at ChristianaCare's Wilmington Hospital before traveling roughly 30 miles to Philadelphia, where he was taken into custody near 9:30 p.m.

ABC7 Chicago referenced a law enforcement source indicating the incident started when a hospital employee opened fire on two colleagues during a deliberate and isolated assault. The Wilmington Police Department has not disclosed details on the victims or the status of the wounded party.

Staff secured the facility by implementing a lockdown and creating barricades to block the attacker. ChristianaCare issued a statement noting that the threat had ended, the site was back to normal operations, and patients along with staff faced no further danger.

"Today serves as a sobering reminder that gun violence can impact anyone," stated Delaware Governor Matt Meyer during a Tuesday evening press conference.

Law enforcement praised for response

Wilmington Mayor John Carney stated on his official Facebook page that the gunman now faces charges and extradition proceedings to Delaware while recognizing the effective actions of first responders during the emergency.

"This has been a terrible day for our city and especially for the hospital workers who were subjected to this terror," he said during the press conference. "It is also been a day, though, when our law enforcement teams were at their best."

The investigation remains active with additional details expected in the days ahead.
