Violent crime has fallen, FBI arrests have increased

Democratic senators on Tuesday challenged FBI Director Kash Patel regarding a news report claiming that bouts of heavy drinking disrupted his command of America's leading law enforcement organization, eliciting a heated denial from Patel.

During the session with a Senate budget committee, Patel stood firm on his record at the FBI, countering Democratic critiques that his actions - including the alleged alcohol incidents - compromised national security and indicated flawed decision-making.

This marked Patel's debut testimony before Congress following his public beer enjoyment at the Milan Winter Olympics and a pointed Atlantic magazine feature that spotlighted concerns about his directorship. Lawmakers referenced both events directly.

Patel backed the Trump administration's request for a $12.5 billion FBI budget in 2027, emphasizing a decline in violent crime nationwide alongside a surge in FBI apprehensions over the previous year.

Maryland Democrat Sen. Chris Van Hollen zeroed in on the Atlantic piece, which described episodes of "obvious intoxication and mysterious absences" that troubled leaders at the FBI and Justice Department. Patel has filed a defamation lawsuit against the publication and its journalist; the outlet maintains confidence in its coverage.

"Should these claims hold up, they signal a serious failure in your responsibilities and a violation of public confidence," Van Hollen declared at the hearing's outset.

Nominated by President Donald Trump, Patel rejected the report's assertions outright, labeling it a "complete fabrication."

He fired back at Van Hollen, alleging the senator had been "slinging margaritas in El Salvador using taxpayer funds," alluding to Van Hollen's prior-year journey to meet Kilmar Abrego, a Maryland-based Salvadoran migrant erroneously deported under Trump policies and held in El Salvador.

Van Hollen shot back that Patel's charge was "demonstrably untrue." Images from the visit depicted cocktail glasses nearby, though Van Hollen clarified they were positioned there by Salvadoran authorities to cast doubt on the encounter's legitimacy.
