President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian strikes across Ukraine killed at least 11 people and sparked a fire at a prominent religious site in the capital.

Officials reported four fatalities in Kyiv while five rescue personnel died battling a blaze from a strike on Kharkiv in the northeast.

The 11th-century Dormition Cathedral sustained heavy damage in what Zelensky termed a major crime against Christian heritage. Russia rejected claims it targeted the location.

Separately a Ukrainian drone attack on Tula in Russia killed three and injured three others including a one-year-old according to local authorities.

Fires broke out in buildings and vehicles leaving more than 140000 Kyiv residents without electricity Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Air raid warnings covered most of Ukraine on Monday morning.

The Kyiv strikes hit several residential buildings wounding at least 23 people with Zelensky reporting 53 injuries nationwide.

The Dormition Cathedral forms part of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra a Unesco World Heritage Site of monastic buildings.

A large hole appeared in one church wall with flames rising from the partly ruined roof.

Zelensky said Russia fired 70 missiles and 611 drones overnight and the fire has now been put out.

French President Emmanuel Macron joined Zelensky in condemning the attack.

Nothing justifies this strike on our shared heritage Macron posted on X.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the cathedral and civilian strikes as war crimes.

The attacks precede a G7 leaders meeting in France this week where the Ukraine conflict features on the agenda.

Zelensky called for a decisive response with more pressure on Russia and greater aid to Ukraine including anti-ballistic missiles.

The Ukrainian leader noted earlier talks with US President Donald Trump on ending the conflict.

Russia claimed a US-made Patriot missile hit the cathedral possibly after a misfire but offered no supporting evidence.

Russian forces said the strike targeted Ukrainian military facilities.

The cathedral has faced prior strikes since Russias full-scale invasion began in 2022.

In January Russian attacks damaged several buildings in the Lavra complex Ukraine Culture Ministry said.

Unesco recalled that the site was almost destroyed in World War Two except for its southeastern tower.

The UN agency condemned the strike on one of Ukraines key spiritual and cultural landmarks.

Damage to such sites cuts communities off from culture education and vital spaces for recovery the statement said.
