Recent weeks have featured detailed reporting on Ukrainian strikes against locations inside Russia. These targets included refineries and storage facilities linked to the retailer Wildberries with a further incident occurring early Monday.

Russia has intensified its own operations striking among other sites the port of Odesa and nearby districts.

During the first six months of the year Russia conducted 180 attacks on the region about the same total recorded for all of 2025. July alone saw at least 56 more strikes according to The Economist. At least 20 vessels or port facilities were hit and damaged.

As a direct result maritime exports of Ukrainian goods through Odesa ports have been nearly eliminated reduced by as much as 98 percent according to one report.

The situation creates major difficulties for the Ukrainian economy. Ukrainska Pravda notes that 60 percent of imports and exports move by sea. Andriy Pyshnyy governor of the National Bank of Ukraine stated via the UNN site that ongoing attacks on ports and interruptions to sea transport could reduce export earnings by $2.5bn in the second half of the year equal to 0.9 percent of GDP.

Some cargo can shift to the Danube route or land crossings yet the alternatives fall short of full replacement. Ukraine therefore faces conditions similar to 2022 when Russia blocked agricultural shipments across the Black Sea. The timing coincides with the start of harvest season.

Russia owes much of its progress in this effort to a new weapon introduced last year and now used in large numbers in recent weeks. The OSINT account Woofer noted that the system may eventually challenge not only Ukraine but also Nato in any future confrontation.
