Rafael introduces Hunter Eagle kinetic interceptor aimed at low-altitude drone threats

The VTOL system relies on direct impact without explosives and returns to base for vertical landing if the task is canceled

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has launched Hunter Eagle, a compact kinetic interceptor built to address the rising danger posed by low-altitude unmanned aircraft in current combat zones. First displayed at Defence Security and Equipment International (DSEI) 2025 and now shown in its production version at ILA Berlin 2026, the platform expands Rafael layered counter-UAS lineup.

Low-altitude drones ranging from small hobby quadcopters to larger Group 3 aircraft have emerged as highly disruptive tools on the battlefield. Their capacity to operate at low heights, avoid radar detection, and deliver guided or makeshift payloads has compelled armed forces to revise air defense strategies. The spread of inexpensive, single-use drones has also saturated conventional point-defense setups, generating demand for interceptors that combine speed, accuracy, and affordability.

IDF units active in southern Lebanon continue to confront low-altitude drones deployed by the Lebanese Shia terror organization Hezbollah, resulting in more than a dozen soldiers and reservists killed along with many additional injuries.

Israel Defense Ministry, working through MAFAT and the defense technology sector, has accelerated efforts to counter this danger, and Hunter Eagle represents Rafael contribution to that effort.

A compact reusable hard-kill interceptor

The interceptor is a vertical-takeoff-and-landing drone measuring about 0.4 to 0.5 meters in height and weighing 5 to 10 kilograms. Its cylindrical body contains an electro-optical seeker, while cruciform wings support electric motors fitted with three-blade propellers at each end. This layout enables quick vertical launch from a four-legged ground unit, followed by independent terminal guidance after the seeker acquires the target.

In contrast to loitering munitions or explosive-carrying interceptors, Hunter Eagle employs a pure hit-to-kill method. It carries no warhead, removing the chance of unintended damage, which is vital as drone engagements occur nearer to populated zones, key infrastructure, and allied units. Should it fail to connect or the mission be halted, the interceptor returns to its launch site and lands vertically for reuse.

The platform operates as a single unit or in coordinated groups to handle several threats at once. It is designed to engage Group 1 through Group 3 unmanned aerial systems, covering small quadcopters up to larger fixed-wing drones used for reconnaissance, strikes, and one-way attacks of the type observed in Lebanon.

The system fits into Rafael broader Drone Dome family, extending the firm detection-classification-neutralization sequence with a reusable kinetic element. Drone Dome already features electronic-warfare and directed-energy tools, while Hunter Eagle supplies a hard-kill choice for drones that resist jamming or demand physical elimination.

Addressing the low-altitude threat setting

Rafael states that Hunter Eagle was created under a new internal unit dedicated to low-altitude threats, an area that has gained prominence as both state and non-state actors employ drones for surveillance, targeting, and precise strikes. Fighting in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Caucasus has shown that small UAS can hit armored vehicles, artillery sites, and supply points with little advance notice.

Hezbollah fiber-optic drones have become a significant concern on the northern border. Unlike standard UAVs, these platforms remain physically linked to their operators, rendering them resistant to electronic warfare and jamming. Their modest cost, frequently below 1000 dollars, supports large-scale use by Hezbollah, while onboard autonomy permits navigation and targeting with limited outside input.

The company presents Hunter Eagle as a mature solution ready for delivery in 2026.
