Almost eight decades after Qantas first flew between Australia and Britain, the airline edges toward its boldest goal yet with a nonstop commercial service linking Sydney directly to London.

This week the carrier confirmed London as the debut city for Project Sunrise, its plan to link Australia's eastern seaboard with far-flung destinations, beginning with the British capital and later adding New York.

Bookings should open in February 2027, with inaugural services targeted for October that year once regulators approve, trials finish, and the aircraft receives certification.

Depending on winds and chosen path, the journey will span 19 to 21 hours and establish a fresh standard for ultra-long-haul travel while converting one of aviation's toughest trips into a seamless single leg.

The effort has drawn industry attention for nearly ten years. Back in 2017 Qantas urged Airbus and Boeing to create an aircraft capable of nonstop flights from Sydney and Melbourne to London and New York carrying a genuine commercial load. Airbus ultimately won the contract with an order for twelve A350-1000ULR jets built for extreme range.

Modified airframe surpasses regular A350 performance

The jet differs from a standard A350 through major structural upgrades, above all a rear-center fuel tank with 20,000-liter capacity. This change boosts range by roughly 1,000 nautical miles, enabling distances beyond 16,000 kilometers for as long as 22 hours. Twin Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines power the plane, which also features higher maximum takeoff weight and an advanced fuel-transfer system that safely moves fuel across tanks during extended flights under varying conditions.

Preparations extend past the airframe. In June 2026 the first test aircraft, MSN707, completed its initial flight from Toulouse lasting three hours and 43 minutes while climbing above 41,000 feet, starting a two-month certification program.

Engineers are evaluating the new fuel systems, pumps, sensors, pressures, temperatures, galley cooling, cabin airflow, and overall ability to keep conditions comfortable throughout an exceptionally long sector.

A notable engineering aspect is that the test jet is not a dedicated prototype but a production airframe destined for passenger service.

Consequently thousands of sensors were fitted without compromising the future cabin. Airbus installed heat simulators to mimic a full passenger load and study temperature, ventilation, and comfort needs over nearly a full day aloft.

Interior configuration departs from typical layouts

The cabin differs markedly from standard versions. Qantas will fly the type with only 238 seats, far below usual capacity. The arrangement features six first-class suites, 52 business seats, 40 premium-economy seats, and 140 economy seats including economy-plus.

More than 40 percent of seats are reserved for premium cabins, reflecting a strategy focused on selling time savings and a smoother experience on an unusually long trip.

A wellbeing zone will sit between premium economy and economy, offering stretch bars, exercise screens, and a refreshment station.

Special lighting aligned with sleep-wake cycles will help passengers adapt to the destination time zone, while meals, rest periods, and cabin routines follow a coordinated plan to limit jet lag.

Research underpinning the project spans years. Qantas collaborated with University of Sydney experts to study meal timing, hydration, movement, light exposure, and sleep impacts on travelers and staff.

In 2019 the airline ran research flights from New York and London to Sydney using Boeing 787-9s carrying limited passengers and crew to gather data on alertness, rest, and overall experience for future ultra-long operations.

Qantas long-haul history predates jets. In 1947 the Kangaroo Route from Sydney to London required four days and seven stops including Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Cairo, and Rome. Successive aircraft generations trimmed those stops, and Project Sunrise aims to remove the final one.

The project name recalls Qantas World War II double-sunrise flights when Catalina flying boats linked Western Australia to Ceylon to keep Britain connected after Singapore fell. Those trips sometimes carried just three passengers plus mail, lasted over 30 hours, and remain among history's longest commercial sectors by airborne time.

Today Singapore Airlines holds the active record on its New York JFK-Singapore service covering about 15,349 kilometers aboard an A350-900ULR with average durations above 18 hours.

Other lengthy routes include Newark-Singapore, Auckland-Doha, Perth-London, Melbourne-Dallas, Perth-Paris, New York-Auckland, Auckland-Dubai, Los Angeles-Singapore, and San Francisco-Bengaluru.

Qantas already operates one very long sector, Perth-London, launched in 2018. Sydney-London, however, presents greater distance, more intricate routing, and dependence on tailwinds, seasonal patterns, airspace rules, and fuel planning. Polar tracks may be used at times, particularly in Northern Hemisphere winter.

The commercial case is equally demanding. Qantas must convince travelers to pay extra for nonstop service. The airline expects business and premium customers to value reduced travel time, avoided connections, and lower delay risks.

On the Perth-London route the carrier has already commanded higher fares than connecting options and hopes to repeat that success.

Even so, a 20-hour flight challenges passengers and crews. Despite advanced lighting, improved seating, scheduled meals, and a stretching area, the body is not built for nearly a full day seated. Operations will need precise crew rostering, rest facilities for pilots and cabin staff, fatigue tracking, medical oversight for vulnerable travelers, and contingency plans for emergencies far from diversion airports.

Success also hinges on regulatory clearance and stable global operations. Airspace closures, conflicts, severe weather, or insurance limits could force reroutes and erode time advantages.

Qantas has already adjusted existing flights due to Middle East tensions and will retain similar flexibility for the new project.

If the Sydney-London service launches on schedule it will intensify rivalry between hub-and-spoke carriers in the Gulf and Asia and point-to-point operators. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines built profitable models around stopovers. Qantas now seeks to attract passengers to fewer airports, shorter waits, no plane changes, and longer continuous flight time.

Project Sunrise success could unlock further routes. After London comes New York, with potential later additions across North America, Europe, Africa, and South America based on demand and fleet deliveries.

As aircraft grow more efficient, engines more powerful, and cabins more attuned to human needs than sheer seat numbers, the world's longest flight may evolve from technological demonstration into routine commercial service.
