While similar races have occurred nationwide, this contest carries added significance due to Michigan's role in presidential elections. Abdul El-Sayed, supported by Sen. Bernie Sanders, faces four-term Rep. Haley Stevens, who has backing from Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.

Democratic and Republican voters in Michigan are also choosing nominees to replace term-limited Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

In Kansas, Missouri, Virginia and Washington state, voters are resolving primaries across multiple races, including a notable rematch between Democrats in a Missouri House contest. Democrats in Virginia, whose efforts to redraw districts were blocked by the state supreme court, aim to select candidates capable of defeating Republicans in November.

The matchup between El-Sayed and Stevens has drawn focus for Democrats this year and turned contentious. The winner must unite divided groups to defeat Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman.

The seat opened after Democratic Sen. Gary Peters announced retirement, placing pressure on Democrats to hold it and maintain hopes of Senate control.

AIPAC and its affiliates have spent nearly $30 million backing Stevens, adding another layer to the race.

This spending has sparked debate in Democratic circles amid divisions over U.S. support for Israel following the Gaza war. AIPAC endorses candidates who favor stronger U.S.-Israeli ties, a topic of note in Michigan given its large Arab American community.

El-Sayed has framed the outside funds as a test of whether local efforts can counter heavy spending from beyond the state.

Similar tensions surfaced in 2024 when Democratic activists urged now-Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin to adopt a firmer stance on Israel's actions in Gaza. Slotkin, who is Jewish, had already stepped back from AIPAC and won against Rogers by under 20,000 votes.

Rogers seeks the Senate seat again and faces no opposition in the Republican primary.

Republican voters will also pick their nominee for Michigan governor. President Donald Trump has endorsed Rep. John James.

Trump's support often sways Republican voters, yet businessman Perry Johnson has self-funded over $30 million per state records.
