Norwegian teen sentenced to 20 years in UK for Iran-linked murder plot after online recruitment

Foxtrot Network, a Swedish criminal outfit, ties to slayings across Europe, while UK and US officials claim the network conducted strikes on Israeli and Jewish sites for Iran.

A Norwegian teenager who traveled to Britain intending to carry out a killing after online recruitment by a Swedish crime network connected to Iran received a 20-year jail term on Friday.

British prosecutors noted that Johannes Natland, now 19, joined the Foxtrot Network, a Swedish criminal group that hires young people for violence-for-hire jobs serving clients such as the Iranian state.

He was found guilty in July of conspiracy to murder. Natland had not learned the identity of the target he agreed to eliminate for payment of 270,000 Norwegian kroner, about $28,600, prosecutors noted.

The case forms part of several recent matters in Britain involving young adults tried for grave crimes after online recruitment. Britain indicates some became unwitting agents for foreign states like Iran or Russia.

Foxtrot links to multiple killings throughout Europe, and Britain along with the US assert the group executed assaults on Israeli and Jewish targets for Iran, which rejects the claim.

Teen said it will be cool to kill

Natland had just turned 18 when he flew from Norway to Britain after answering an ad that promised payment for a killing and claimed nothing could go wrong.

He admitted holding a semi-automatic pistol, a revolver and ammunition, yet denied conspiracy to murder, claiming he never planned to follow through and had thought of shooting his own foot to escape.

Yet prosecutors described Natland as an eager participant who told a friend it will be cool to kill someone.

Judge says she was sure Natland would have carried out attack if not caught

Natland received his sentence at Londons Woolwich Crown Court for 20 years detention from Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb, who stated she felt certain he would have completed the murder without police intervention.

This was not an impulsive act lasting a few moments, your conduct demonstrated purpose and persistence, she said, noting Natland must serve at least 13 years in custody.

Natlands Norwegian lawyer Farid Bouras said in a statement: Our priority now is to bring him home. We will be working to secure his transfer to Norway as quickly as we possibly can.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said no evidence showed any direct Iran link in Natlands case, which warned others who might be drawn in as criminal proxies.

As Natland found, the people orchestrating these crimes will not protect you from the consequences, she said.
