The US National Park Service has taken down at least 51 exhibits across 38 locations to comply with President Donald Trump's executive order on displays that inappropriately criticize Americans from the past or present, according to a court-mandated inventory.

Details from a recent Trump administration filing include sites such as Philadelphia's Independence National Historical Park, where a display on George Washington's ownership of enslaved people was removed.

The administration provided the list following a ruling by Boston-based US District Judge Angel Kelley, who determined that the government was unlawfully attempting to alter the nation's history.

The decision responded to a lawsuit from organizations representing park conservationists, historians, and scientists, who claimed violations of laws on National Park Service procedures.

In a separate filing, the administration described the judge's requirement to restore the exhibits by July 3, ahead of the 250th anniversary of the country's founding, as an overwhelming and impractical effort. Officials requested a pause on the order while appealing the decision that blocked Interior Secretary Doug Burgum from carrying out the March 2025 directive.

Trump's directive focused on what he described as a revisionist movement portraying the United States as inherently racist, sexist, oppressive, or otherwise irredeemably flawed, and instructed the Interior Department to implement nationwide changes at parks.

Critics have charged that Trump seeks to remove elements of American history to align with his own inaccurate views of the country.

To assess the administration's request for a pause, Kelley indicated she required additional details on the extent of the exhibit alterations and ordered a list of removed items.

The spreadsheet referenced locations including Fort Sumter in South Carolina, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at the Gateway National Recreation Area in New York, and Acadia National Park in Maine.

Materials on climate change were removed from all three sites, per the court ruling, because they did not relate to the beauty, abundance, and grandeur of the natural landscape.

A National Park Service official noted in a court filing that the inventory was probably incomplete, with some identified items not yet removed.

Kelley, appointed by former President Joe Biden, observed that an internal database leaked in March listed over 500 items flagged for review and possible removal.

The agency added that the filed list included six items from a 39th park removed under a separate Trump executive order, for transparency purposes.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs have not yet commented on the developments.
