Minnesota Man Receives Life Sentence for Killing Top Democratic Lawmaker

The attacker also injured State Senator John Hoffman along with his spouse Yvette during separate home assaults a short distance away.

The Minnesota resident who admitted guilt in the assassination of a prominent Democratic official and the attempted murder of another received a life term in federal prison on Thursday, roughly 13 months after posing as law enforcement to strike at the lawmakers residences.

Vance Boelter, age 59, received back-to-back life terms plus an additional 40 years from US District Court Judge John Tunheim in Minneapolis. He entered guilty pleas to six charges in June, including murder, under a deal with prosecutors that spared him from facing capital punishment.

"Political violence strikes not just its direct targets but also our neighborhoods, democratic systems, and legal principles," Acting US Attorney Todd Blanche stated.

Boelter used a silicone disguise, wore a police-style uniform, and operated an SUV marked with a "Police" plate while carrying out the nighttime shootings on June 14, 2025.

After ringing the bell and entering, Boelter killed Melissa Hortman, the leading Democrat in the Minnesota House, and her husband Mark at their residence. Earlier that evening he had wounded State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette at their home several miles distant.

Targeted Residences of Two More Officials

Authorities noted he also approached the homes of two additional lawmakers that night, yet received no response at one and departed the other after an officer mistook him for a colleague and neared his vehicle.

Officers discovered a roster naming over 45 Minnesota figures inside his car. Law enforcement apprehended Boelter two days afterward following the states largest manhunt on record.

The incidents underscored the rise in political attacks across the US in recent years.

At the Thursday hearing, victims and relatives described the deep impact of Boelters actions, as reported by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"I miss my mom, I miss my dad," said Sophie Hortman, the Hortmans daughter, through tears. "I miss believing in the goodness of humanity."

Boelter Enters Guilty Pleas

Mark Hortmans father, J. Carroll Hortman, faulted officials for accepting the plea arrangement, according to the newspaper. He added that he sought to contact Blanche without success.

In response to inquiries, a Justice Department representative noted that the attorney general weighs input from victims families when deciding on capital punishment in particular matters.

"Yet even when the death penalty might seem appropriate, major legal or proof-related barriers can prevent a viable path to pursue it," the statement indicated, without detailing any such issues in this instance.

Following the June pleas, US Attorney Daniel Rosen in Minnesota told reporters, "This matter as filed qualified for the death penalty, and we would have succeeded in court. Still, when a defendant agrees to admit guilt to guarantee lifelong imprisonment without release, that chance could not be overlooked."

Boelter offered a short apology in court ahead of sentencing.

"To every person I have caused loss, pain, heartache, confusion, sadness, shame, or loneliness, I am truly sorry," he stated, per the Star Tribune.
