When Spencer Lucker received the alert that Michigan's Democratic Senate primary had gone to Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive who frequently criticized AIPAC and Israel during his campaign, the news landed hard.

"I struggle to understand that this represents the Democratic Party I have long backed and belonged to," said Lucker, a 38-year-old from Huntington Woods, Michigan, who supported US Rep. Haley Stevens in the primary.

As Lucker processed the Wednesday results after an election night where El-Sayed narrowly defeated Stevens 48.5 percent to 47.5 percent, he noted the slim gap provided limited comfort amid ongoing worries about the nominee.

"There is some relief and hope in however many people voted for her," Lucker said. "But the margin does not change the outcome."

El-Sayed's closer-than-expected finish, despite polls showing a stronger lead beforehand, has given critics a point of optimism, with Jewish leaders arguing the result shows many Michigan voters reject his anti-Israel positions.

Jewish Leaders Push Back on Anti-Israel Mandate Claims

"Tuesday's outcome shows two things: strong anti-establishment sentiment exists this cycle, yet pro-Israel Democrats remain a force," said Brian Romick, president of the Democratic Majority for Israel PAC. "Though El-Sayed's narrow Michigan win disappoints, it fell short of the decisive victory he anticipated or any endorsement of his positions."

Halie Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, which supported Stevens, stated, "We regret the Michigan Senate race result, yet the slim margin does not deliver the decisive far-left triumph once forecast."

With El-Sayed now set to face Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman, in November, attention has shifted to whether the primary's tight result signals a Democratic defeat in this key battleground state.

Recent polls before the primary showed Rogers slightly ahead of El-Sayed, but Josh Pasek, a University of Michigan professor of communication, media, and political science, warned against using the primary margin to predict general election chances.

"Disappointment carries weight and affects enthusiasm among backers of each candidate," said Pasek, who is Jewish and has engaged in Democratic politics. "The key issue is how the party, candidates, and supporters handle what follows."

Since his win, El-Sayed has gained backing from Stevens and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who had supported her earlier. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also issued a Wednesday appeal to donors for El-Sayed's general election effort.

Throughout the campaign, El-Sayed faced pushback from many Jewish Democrats for his AIPAC critiques, ties to anti-Israel streamer Hasan Piker, and comments after the March attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. While he condemned the incident, his remarks also referenced Israel's actions in Lebanon, where the attacker's brother died.

El-Sayed Urged to Strengthen Connections With Jewish Voters

El-Sayed now signals intent to connect with Jewish Democrats statewide. In his victory address, he directly addressed Jewish voters, stating his "commitment to Jewish safety matches my dedication to my own daughters' safety."

Jessica "Decky" Alexander, chair of the Michigan Jewish Democratic Caucus, said Stevens' strong performance highlighted that El-Sayed must assemble a "much more diverse coalition" for November, including Jewish residents.

"I worried more that we would lack a seat at the table, so I believe we now have one," Alexander said. "It feels odd, yet in some ways we form part of this story and narrative, leaving me somewhat relieved."

Michigan's Jewish Democrats confront the same question that defined the primary: whether those put off by El-Sayed's language can back him in November.

Lucker said he cannot bring himself to vote for El-Sayed yet remains unsure about supporting Rogers due to the Republican's social issue positions.

"I firmly believe we must avoid voting against our interests, and supporting him feels like opposing the interests of me as a Jewish community leader and father," Lucker said of the nominee. "At the same time, I question voting for Mike Rogers either, as a father of a young girl, husband, and son of gay moms."

Elizabeth Dizik, a 42-year-old Jewish voter from Lathrup Village near Detroit, considers another option.

Dizik said El-Sayed's response to the Temple Israel attack disqualified him from her support.

"As a Jewish Democrat with young children, I sense our Democratic candidate does not prioritize my children's safety, meaning he fails to represent all of Michigan," Dizik said. "His language seems risky, and I feel disappointed and saddened that such rhetoric gains acceptance in the party."

Dizik added she is "more inclined to vote for Rogers than to skip voting."

While Jewish Democrats consider November choices, Pasek said he doubts most alienated by El-Sayed will ultimately back a Republican, though some may skip the general election.

"Some people choose not to vote, which happens far more often than switching parties," he noted, adding, "Longtime party voters find it difficult to abandon their party."

Pasek described the Michigan Senate race as distinctive and potentially precedent-breaking. "This primary grew more intense than many on topics harder to bridge, especially between Jewish and Arab communities," he said, stressing El-Sayed's upcoming actions matter greatly.

"If El-Sayed hopes to retain support from those who might otherwise abstain, he must pursue meaningful outreach and build connections," Pasek said. "It presents a challenge given the apparent divide so far."

Calls Grow for El-Sayed to Engage Jewish Democrats

Some Jewish Democratic leaders already urge El-Sayed to take that step.

"He must reach out to the Jewish community," said Adam Duberstein, a Jewish City Councilmember in Clawson, Michigan, and co-chair of outreach for the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus, which backed Stevens.

The Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus has yet to decide on endorsing El-Sayed for the general election, Duberstein said, pointing to "a range of views" inside the group.

Alexander said the caucus remains far from any decision.

"I expect he would pursue it. He sought our primary endorsement, but as a caucus we must determine what we need to hear from him and his team," Alexander said.

Duberstein reported hearing varied responses since the victory, including abstention, support for Rogers, or third-party options. He viewed these as chances for El-Sayed.

"People seek ways to move ahead together so Jewish Democrats can help retain a Democrat in the seat," Duberstein said. "I hope he uses this moment to learn about our community."

Alexander expressed hope that Jewish Democrats will avoid withdrawing from the party despite the primary's "harmful" rhetoric.

"I worry many will either skip voting or choose Rogers," Alexander said. "Those paths seem simple. The tougher step involves talking, connecting, and conversing, which proves harder yet necessary."

As the caucus charts its course, Duberstein said the primary results, nearly tying El-Sayed and Stevens, reflect broader Democratic questions.

"It signals ongoing questions about the Democratic Party's direction, not only in Michigan but nationwide," Duberstein said. "Which path should we take, and how inclusive should our tent be? How can El-Sayed supporters and Congresswoman Stevens backers collaborate to shape the party's future and character?"

For Jewish voters like Lucker, the issue centers on whether they still see a place in that tent.

"I am not and never have been a single-issue voter, which leaves me feeling politically adrift," Lucker said. "Does either party truly value me, my family, and my community? I remain unconvinced."
