Meta employees shared flyers across several US offices on Tuesday to voice opposition to the company's new mouse-tracking software installed on work computers, according to images of the materials.

The flyers turned up in meeting rooms, on vending machines, and even atop toilet paper dispensers in Facebook offices, calling on staff to endorse an online petition against the technology.

'Don't want to work at the Employee Data Extraction Factory?' the flyers questioned, per the images.

This flyer campaign unfolds roughly one week ahead of Meta's planned layoffs affecting 10% of its workforce.

It marks the clearest indication yet of an emerging labor push inside the social media company, with some workers directing frustration over AI-driven workforce changes into organizing activities.

Meta staff have expressed anger for months on internal channels and online discussions regarding major layoffs this year - confirmed to employees well after initial reports - and the mouse-tracking tool, which many view as aiding the creation of automated replacements.

Meta justifies the monitoring tool

A Meta spokesperson, when approached for comment, directed inquiries to a prior company statement on the mouse-tracking system.

'If we're building agents to help people complete everyday tasks using computers, our models need real examples of how people actually use them - things like mouse movements, clicking buttons, and navigating dropdown menus,' the statement explained.

Both the flyers and petition reference the US National Labor Relations Act, noting that 'workers are legally protected when they choose to organize for the improvement of working conditions.'

In the UK, Meta employees are launching a union drive with United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW), part of the Communication Workers Union.

The group created a website at Leanin.uk to attract members, nodding to former COO Sheryl Sandberg's book promoting workplace equality for women.

A UTAW spokesperson verified the UK effort.

'Meta’s workers are paying the price for management’s reckless and expensive bets. While executives chase speculative AI strategies, staff are facing devastating job cuts, draconian surveillance, and the cruel reality of being forced to train the inefficient systems being positioned to replace them,' stated Eleanor Payne, a UTAW organizer.
