The document received solid backing, with 27 votes supporting it, nine opposing and zero abstentions.

As expected, resistance originated from conservative factions: the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), along with the far-right Patriots for Europe (PfE) and Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN). Billy Kelleher, Irish MEP representing Renew Europe and the lead negotiator for this initiative, noted that these parties persist in advancing views that weaken progress toward equality.

During this discussion, Kelleher addressed the enduring challenges women encounter continent-wide and outlined the reasons gender equity in medical services stays a key political focus.

In what ways do medical and scientific fields handle female physiology differently?

One core problem lies in the established norms within medicine and research. For decades, these areas remained largely controlled by men. Numerous training initiatives and focus areas centered primarily on male perspectives. This influence appeared in clinician education and academic priorities alike.

Yet funding, trial participation and medication availability represent more pressing concerns today. Disparities persist in these domains. Clinical studies frequently omit specific groups of women, creating a major obstacle given that females comprise half the global population. Removing several segments from the participant pool distorts trial outcomes and reduces their applicability to wider demographics.

Without full population coverage in trials, uncertainty remains about medication effects on groups such as expectant or nursing mothers.

Female physiology differs from male physiology. This distinction is straightforward. Safety data from male subjects cannot automatically extend to women.

Do safety reasons explain the exclusion of breastfeeding and pregnant participants from numerous trials?

Yes, and all factors require careful review. Efficacy, potential hazards and balanced considerations must guide choices, which I acknowledge.

At the same time, entire population segments cannot be set aside without solid proof that risks warrant such steps.

Specialists hold the expertise for these judgments. Therefore the European Medicines Agency should develop clear protocols to examine these matters thoroughly instead of defaulting to exclusions.

Proposed solutions include greater investment in female health studies, improved trial participation for women and attention to gender in diagnosis and care. Why have these steps not occurred earlier?

Many trials and their organizers routinely omit groups including nursing mothers, expectant women and those in particular age ranges. This represents a notable shortcoming. The call is for evaluations and requirements ensuring wide representation across population segments during trial design.

Recommendations involve the European Medicines Agency issuing protocols for higher inclusion levels, requiring data broken down by sex and enforcing gender-aware study structures across all research phases. These represent three key elements related to trials.

Research spending in health care forms another focus. Gender-specific fields suffer from insufficient support and resources, posing an additional serious concern.

No. This report contains our suggestions. The document received committee approval and will advance to the full assembly session, likely in September.
