Officers in Madison, Wisconsin, shot and killed a man they were attempting to detain on Wednesday amid a street struggle captured by witnesses and shared widely online, prompting demonstrations across the city.

Authorities reported that the officer who discharged his firearm sustained an injury from a knife the man brandished during the altercation.

Witness recordings circulating in media and on digital platforms indicated the deceased appeared to be a person of color, while the four involved officers seemed to be white.

Racial dynamics have heightened debates about the justification for lethal force, similar to prior incidents nationwide, as an advocacy group representing African American interests identified the victim as Black.

At a press briefing, Madison Police Chief John Patterson referred to the deceased solely as a man in his thirties and refrained from disclosing the race of the individual or the officers, who included three men and one woman.

Patterson recounted that the response originated from a report of someone suspected of inspecting parked vehicles in Madison's Marquette neighborhood. Upon locating the man and attempting contact, he escaped on a bicycle.

Officers apprehended him roughly thirty minutes afterward, leading to the struggle after he either fell or was removed from the bicycle, according to the chief.

Separate Probe Launched into Officer Conduct

Patterson announced that the Wisconsin Department of Justice criminal division would handle an independent inquiry, with all four officers placed on administrative leave pending results.

The chief noted he had examined two public bystander videos but emphasized additional unreleased footage existed and urged the public against premature judgments.

When questioned if the shooting appeared to involve excessive force, Patterson stated he could not yet determine that.

The circulating videos offer only one viewpoint, he added, and do not provide a complete picture from all angles.

Footage shows the officers struggling with the man amid calls of "Let go" and "he's got a knife."

In one segment, an officer calls out "Taser" during the grapple. Moments later the man is taken to the ground, an officer stomps on his legs, and another draws a firearm to fire three rounds before reholstering and kneeling beside the now motionless individual.

Chief Confirms Single Officer Fired Three Rounds

Patterson confirmed three shots were fired by one veteran officer after the man produced a large fixed blade knife during resistance, injuring that officer.

A second officer also received an injury in the exchange.

Another officer tried to subdue the man with a Taser, but it failed to work for reasons still unclear.

The exact interval between the knife appearing and the shots remains undetermined, though an object resembling the knife is visible on the ground from the video's start, which misses the struggle's onset.
