Tensions between activists and police near a New Jersey immigration holding facility since late May have turned into a major point of resistance to President Donald Trump immigration enforcement efforts.

Over 80 individuals have faced arrest amid repeated demonstrations at Delaney Hall in Newark, where participants express support for those held inside amid claims of substandard conditions.

The Trump administration has stood by the care provided to those at the 1,000-bed site.

Here is what stands out:

The site belongs to Geo Group, a private operator managing several holding centers nationwide.

Those held inside began a hunger strike last month, per Cosecha, an immigrant rights organization. They sent out handwritten notes outlining requests for better daily conditions and medical support, noting some lack access to needed prescriptions.

People held at various sites nationwide have raised similar issues around medical oversight for ongoing health needs and have staged hunger strikes elsewhere.

Those at Delaney Hall report receiving spoiled and outdated meals, including some containing maggots, along with cramped quarters without cooling systems. Lawmakers from New York City who toured the site early on found the accounts believable.

President Donald Trump and his team have rejected claims of a hunger strike, mistreatment or inadequate standards at the location.

"The fact is, we are providing the nutrition they request," Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated recently. "This is not a resort."

Tom Homan, Trump border czar, spoke positively of the meals following his own visit. "The pasta tasted fine," he shared with CBS News.

GEO Group has labeled the concerns as driven by political efforts from external parties aiming to end ICE operations and federal immigration holding by focusing on contractors.

Activists, some equipped with protective masks and headgear, have employed traffic cones, bins and similar objects as barriers while attempting to stop vehicles from accessing the site.

Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche posted photos online showing injuries to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel.

Footage circulating online captures officers in protective gear using chemical irritants and physical force against the crowd. Some clips depict mounted police advancing through groups.

On Friday evening, ICE personnel took four people into custody on accusations including attacks on officers, interference and threats, according to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on X. Newark police separately noted charges against a Seattle resident for property damage involving vehicle windows.

"No individual may enter our city to damage belongings or spark disorder," Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda wrote online. "Consider carefully before arriving in Newark with motives beyond peaceful demonstration."

One officer faced charges related to taking $10,000 in photography gear from an Associated Press journalist injured during the events. The reporter, Angelina Katsanis, received a blow to the knee from a wooden object amid clashes and later used tracking tools to locate the items at the officer residence, per the state attorney general Thursday.

Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill initially hesitated to step in but deemed the escalating clashes unsafe and improper, leading to deployment of state police for control.

State officers established protest areas and entry checks after ICE staff withdrew from positions in front of the facility.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka set a 9 p.m. limit and directed local police to uphold it.

Yet a week afterward, the Democrat reduced city police involvement, citing fewer arrests and unwillingness to expend public funds protecting a privately run site.

The state attorney general launched legal action this week against Geo Group, claiming the facility blocked full state health reviews of the allegations.
