Confrontations between activists and officers near a New Jersey immigration detention site since late May have emerged as a prominent example of resistance to President Donald Trump's stricter immigration measures.

Over 80 individuals have faced arrest amid repeated demonstrations outside Delaney Hall in Newark, where participants express support for those held inside amid claims of inadequate living standards.

The Trump administration has upheld the care provided to those detained at the 1,000-bed center.

Claims of Inadequate Care at Delaney Hall

The center belongs to Geo Group, a private operator managing several detention locations nationwide.

Those held inside began a hunger strike last month, per Cosecha, an immigrant rights organization. They sent handwritten notes outlining requests for better facilities and medical attention, noting that some lack access to needed prescriptions.

Similar reports of health care shortfalls have surfaced at other sites, prompting hunger strikes elsewhere.

Detainees at Delaney Hall describe receiving spoiled and outdated meals, including some containing maggots, along with cramped quarters without cooling systems. Lawmakers from New York City toured the site early on and found the descriptions believable.

Trump Administration Stands by Operations

President Donald Trump and his team have rejected notions of a hunger strike, mistreatment, or substandard conditions at the facility.

"The fact is, we are providing the nutrition they require," Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated recently. "This is not a luxury hotel."

Tom Homan, Trump's border advisor, commended the meals following his visit. "The pasta tasted fine," he remarked to CBS News.

GEO Group has labeled the complaints as driven by political efforts from external organizations aiming to end ICE operations and detention by focusing on contractors.

Detentions and Efforts to Block Access

Activists, some equipped with protective masks and headgear, have employed cones, bins, and similar objects as barriers while attempting to halt vehicles entering or exiting the site.

Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche posted photos of injuries to ICE personnel online.

Footage circulating online depicts officers in protective gear using chemical agents and batons against crowds, with some scenes showing mounted police advancing.

On Friday evening, ICE personnel detained four people on counts including attacks on officers, interference, and intimidation, according to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on X. Newark authorities reported charging a Seattle resident with property damage after vehicle windows were broken.

"No individual may enter our city to damage belongings or provoke disorder," Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda stated online. "Consider carefully before arriving in Newark with motives beyond peaceful demonstration."

One officer faces charges for taking $10,000 in camera gear from an Associated Press photographer injured during the events. The journalist, Angelina Katsanis, received a blow to the knee from a wooden object and later tracked the equipment to the officer's residence using location technology, as noted by the state attorney general.

Responses from New Jersey Officials

Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill initially hesitated to step in but later deemed the unrest "unsafe" and "unacceptable," deploying state police to maintain calm.

Troopers established protest areas and entry points, allowing ICE staff to withdraw from the front of the facility.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka set a 9 p.m. curfew and directed local officers to uphold it.

One week later, the mayor reduced police involvement, citing fewer arrests and concerns over using public funds to protect a private site.

The state attorney general filed a case against Geo Group this week, claiming the facility blocked full inspections by health officials.
