Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche informed lawmakers on Tuesday that the Justice Department is abandoning plans for a proposed $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund. The decision marks a clear reversal for President Trump following resistance from Republican senators who indicated they lacked sufficient support to advance a Homeland Security funding bill without changes to or removal of the fund.

Blanche stated directly to Congress that the fund would not proceed despite the underlying reasons remaining significant. When pressed by Representative Grace Meng about whether it was permanently off the table he confirmed that it was. Senate Republican sources indicated their understanding from the White House is that no funds will be disbursed from this initiative.

The announcement stems from a three-part settlement Trump reached with his own administration. While the anti-weaponization fund is eliminated other elements remain including a retroactive immunity agreement with the IRS covering Trump his sons and his businesses as well as a formal apology expected from the U.S. government. Blanche declined to commit the decision to writing stating that his word under oath was sufficient.

Questions persist about whether any money has changed hands or if other modifications have occurred to the settlement. Democrats have raised particular concerns over the immunity provisions. Meanwhile Enrique Tarrio a January 6 figure has suggested alternative funding avenues may still exist for individuals in similar positions.

Republican senators are viewing the public sworn statement as a positive step though they continue to scrutinize the details. This episode highlights growing willingness among some congressional Republicans to draw boundaries on administration priorities after recent ousters of party members. Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized ongoing collaboration with the White House while noting the need to advance shared goals.

The resolution could help move stalled immigration-related measures including ICE funding forward. What had been described as a severely broken process now appears closer to recovery allowing the Senate to address other pressing legislation in the coming weeks.
