US Vice President JD Vance stated that Britain has suffered from poor leadership over an extended period. He expressed hope that the incoming prime minister would bring about the major reforms that citizens have demanded following repeated periods of instability.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, Vance pointed to repeated government turnovers as evidence of fundamental flaws in the British system. Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed last month that he plans to resign after serving two years, setting up the nation for its seventh leader in ten years.

Andy Burnham is viewed as the clear frontrunner to replace Starmer, having emerged as the sole candidate in the leadership race.

"What I see is six prime ministers in the last few years," Vance remarked. "What that says to me is that something is very broken about British politics and that people are really crying out for significant structural change."

"I hope that Andy Burnham - and if not Andy Burnham, somebody else - is able to deliver it," he added, stressing the need for the next leader to restore stability.

US-UK Special Relationship

Vance, whose wife Usha attended the University of Cambridge, has often highlighted his fondness for Britain. He called the nation an amazing place filled with the most remarkable people outside the United States.

His remarks follow a relationship between Starmer and US President Donald Trump that was at times tense yet remained workable overall. The two emphasized the enduring US-UK special relationship even amid differences on topics such as Iran, Gaza, and Ukraine, while finalizing several trade and investment pacts.

Upon learning of Starmer's resignation, Trump called him a lovely man and a sort of friend, though he criticized his record on immigration and energy. Trump wished him well and described Burnham as extremely liberal, suggesting the likely next prime minister might oppose expanded North Sea oil and gas projects.

In the Sunday Times interview, Vance noted he knew little about Burnham but affirmed that Britain stays among America's closest partners. "Whoever is the prime minister, we're going to work with them and work with them as successfully as we can," he said.
