DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza (AP) - Palestinian health officials stated that Israeli strikes across Gaza on Saturday claimed at least six lives, among them two children and a cameraman working for Al Jazeera.

Even with an October ceasefire in place between Israel and Hamas militants, the area has endured near-daily attacks that have resulted in over 1,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

Ministry reports indicate the initial strike hit an apartment building in Gaza City near 2 a.m. An Associated Press journalist observed debris and blood-stained concrete chunks at the location.

The remains of two sisters, four-year-old Zina and 14-year-old Lana, arrived at Shifa Hospital's morgue in white bags, with relatives gathered around.

"I was at home when the rocket struck without notice," said their cousin Mohammad Safadi, who suffered a forehead wound. He added that his wife was also injured.

"Is this the ceasefire the occupation and negotiators describe? We are ordinary civilians who have never carried arms," Safadi remarked.

The Israeli military indicated it was reviewing the event.

Later on Saturday evening, three separate strikes resulted in four deaths and at least a dozen injuries.

One attack struck a residence in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza without prior alert, killing three individuals including Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed Wishah, per Al-Aqsa hospital. Al Jazeera verified Wishah's passing.

Wishah's brother Mohamed, also an Al Jazeera correspondent, had been killed in an Israeli strike back in April.

A separate strike hit a gathering in the Muwasi tent camp in southern Gaza, killing one person and injuring eight others, according to Nasser hospital staff.

A third attack in Gaza City targeted another group, wounding at least four, as reported by Shifa hospital.

In a statement, the Israeli military described the strike on the Al Jazeera cameraman as precise and claimed he belonged to Hamas' military wing, posing a danger to forces nearby.

Israel maintains it targets Hamas and other militants who present risks. Five Israeli soldiers have died since the truce began.

The conflict started after Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 and seizing 251 hostages. Israel's response in Gaza has now killed 73,018 Palestinians, including post-ceasefire deaths, per the Health Ministry.

The ministry, tied to the Hamas-led administration, employs medical staff and keeps records viewed as reliable by UN bodies and experts. It does not separate civilians from fighters but notes women and children account for roughly half the deaths.
