On June 22 Israel's Ministry of Defense released a statement focused on expanding connections eastward. The announcement highlighted the ministry Director General heading a formal defense group to India. In parallel the Israel Defense Forces shared an image from a June 21 discussion involving the Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff Vice Admiral Dimitrios-Eleftherios Kataras and Israeli Navy Commander Vice Admiral Eyal Harel.

Ministry of Defense Director General Amir Baram stated that India remains a vital strategic ally for Israel. This visit, prepared through extended bilateral work, shows the strong priority both nations place on growing their defense and industrial partnership as well as the deep connection between the two peoples.

He added that the relationship rests on common principles, cultural respect and trust that extends past simple interests. These qualities distinguish the partnership and give greater weight to the joint projects now underway.

The two gatherings underscore the defense and security links Israel maintains with India and Greece. When viewed alongside positive ties with Cyprus plus Bahrain and the UAE the pattern creates a continuous chain from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean.

This arrangement demonstrates how Israel and its partners can support the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor known as IMEC. The corridor has been under discussion for several years and forms part of wider regional links between Europe and Asia.

Regional instability linked to Hamas October 7 assault intended to block peace efforts

The Middle East Institute observed in June 2026 that IMEC represents a multinational infrastructure plan to improve links among the three areas via combined trade energy and digital systems. Launched at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023 the project is seen partly as an alternative to China's Belt and Road Initiative.

The institute explained that the plan includes an eastern segment joining India to the Persian Gulf and a northern segment linking the Gulf to Europe through the Levant and Mediterranean. Its combined infrastructure of railways ports power grids and data cables could cut shipping expenses by billions and shorten transit times by as much as 40 percent. At present the original route remains stalled because of ongoing regional tensions.

Those tensions stem from conflicts across the area especially the Israel-Hamas war and its effects. Hamas launched its October 7 attack on Israel in part to disrupt Israel's expanding relationships that followed the 2020 Abraham Accords. The lack of major public events or new members in the accords highlights the difficulties Israel now faces.

Fresh efforts show renewed activity following Gaza ceasefire

Additional projects including I2U2 the Negev Forum and the Atlantic Council's N7 Initiative have also remained largely inactive in recent years.

Signs of progress are now appearing. As fighting subsides and with the US and UN-supported peace agreement in Gaza together with US-Iran discussions in Switzerland a new phase of regional cooperation may emerge.

Military and commercial links will play a central role. Nations such as Pakistan are involved in the Iran talks while India a close partner of Israel has long competed with Pakistan. Qatar is also engaged. At the same time Saudi Arabia Egypt Turkey and Pakistan coordinate more closely on regional matters which some in Jerusalem view as a possible concern.

Although many public Abraham Accords gatherings have paused India Israel Greece and Cyprus keep holding important meetings. The recent Greek navy visit serves as a clear illustration. The IDF stated that the trip shows the strength of security ties between Israel and Greece and their joint resolve to deepen strategic and operational cooperation.

In India the Director General of the Israel Ministry of Defense held talks with India's Defense Minister Defense Secretary Chief of Defense Staff and other senior defense officials to explore ways to expand bilateral defense and industrial cooperation the ministry reported.

The ministry added that the visit aligns with the Defense Minister's plan to grow defense exports in order to strengthen the IDF improve foreign policy and support Israel's defense industry and economy. It forms part of a wider push to broaden Israel's strategic partnerships with an eastward emphasis and to deepen cooperation with key regional nations.
