Irish MEP Barry Andrews has pushed hard in the European Parliament for sanctions targeting illegal Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine. His humanitarian efforts have also elevated his profile inside the centrist Renew group. On Tuesday (28 July) he explained to EUobserver his trade-focused diplomatic approach and the task of steering an Irish Council presidency.

On Friday (24 July) you joined 70 cross-party MEPs in a letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen calling for an end to trade with illegal settlements. Why has action been so delayed?

Signatories believe the Council is intentionally delaying a decision ahead of Israel's 27 October elections. They also hold that the ICJ advisory opinion requires all parties, including member states, to implement trade measures that give the ruling effect.

Limiting trade remains the only meaningful tool, a view shared by millions of Europeans. The letter aims to remind the Commission that many MEPs support this position.

How do Israel's October elections affect talks on trade restrictions?

Some fear the Council will use the vote as an excuse to postpone action and avoid any appearance of interference. After polling, prolonged coalition talks would likely supply fresh reasons for further delay.

Such a pause could extend another year of violence in Gaza and accelerated settlement expansion in the West Bank, including large projects in East Jerusalem. The letter simply records the frustration that the EU cannot remain passive when the world's highest court has issued a clear obligation.

You traveled to the West Bank in May. What conclusions did you reach about Israeli settlements?

The visit revealed clear evidence of apartheid under international law: systematic efforts to restrict Palestinian rights, opportunities, commerce and housing.
