Goodbye to the uninspiring Keir Starmer era, as Britain braces for its seventh prime minister since the Brexit vote, while a frustrated populist figure waits outside the door.

The probable next Labour leader, Andy Burnham, has served a decade as mayor of Manchester, a multicultural and inclusive city of three million whose annual economy exceeds 100 billion pounds and surpasses the output of some smaller European Union nations.

Burnham's opponent in the election expected before 2029 will be Nigel Farage, a right-wing agitator and member of parliament lacking any governing record, whose Reform party currently tops opinion surveys.

Although it appears absurd that someone of Farage's limited ability could lead the fifth-largest global economy and a nuclear state in the tradition of wartime leader Winston Churchill, this would fit the recent pattern of British heads of government who reached new lows with Liz Truss in 2022 following Boris Johnson's tenure from 2019 to 2022.

The same pattern appears worldwide, from the shift in America from Barack Obama to the Trump movement or in Russia from Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms to Vladimir Putin's conflicts.

Recent votes in Poland and Hungary during 2024 and April 2026 highlighted how fragile such populist governments can prove within the European Union.

Setting politics aside, Britain holds personal significance for me since I spent my childhood in Newcastle upon Tyne in northern England after my family moved from Poland in 1983 when I was eight.

At that time our street, local church and nearby pub offered genuine warmth, with residents eager to hear my father's accounts of Solidarity demonstrations in Warsaw.

Yet conditions clearly deteriorated after the 2016 Brexit decision backed by Farage and Johnson, affecting not only international standing and finances but also social attitudes, as it encouraged some white English individuals to express prejudice openly and treat immigrants like my family as outsiders despite my father's four decades as a doctor paying taxes there, and despite our non-Black background.

A Farage premiership would accelerate Britain's downward slide.

So how might Burnham respond to the flood of extreme-right falsehoods and underhanded tactics likely to target him from Farage on social platforms, supportive American figures and Russian sources ahead of this key European ballot?

Toxic material cannot be blocked in the digital era, particularly inside a democratic system.

Although I lack complete solutions, I remember valuable guidance from Panti Bliss, the Irish performer and campaigner for equal rights who helped secure victory in Ireland's landmark 2015 vote on same-sex marriage.

The decisive factor proved to be local efforts rather than elected officials or famous names, according to the activist.

Private actions by individuals revealing their own stories made the real impact, noted Panti Bliss, whose real name is Rory O'Neill.

In modern Ireland almost everyone encounters a gay acquaintance, whether through neighbors, relatives or coworkers, rendering it difficult to avoid such connections, and that personal familiarity secured the referendum outcome, O'Neill explained.

Voters ultimately supported individuals they recognized instead of abstract claims from opponents, O'Neill added.

Therefore if English contacts mention family members considering support for Farage, I will engage directly on social channels as an immigrant who values Britain, aiming through small-scale outreach to influence a few opinions in the months ahead.
