Family members and local officials are calling for a full investigation into the shooting death of a man killed by ICE agents in Houston. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot Tuesday as agents tried to arrest him. Federal officials say he tried to flee and weaponized his vehicle toward an officer who opened fire.

ICE says he was a Mexican national living in the U.S. without legal status. His family and immigration advocates are questioning the official account, saying ICE has yet to provide evidence to support their claims. One of his sons spoke at a news conference, calling for a full investigation into the events and stating that his father did not deserve to die or be reduced to a headline. He emphasized that Salgado Araujo deserved to live a quiet life as a husband, father, and job creator.

Reporter Colleen DeGuzman of The Texas Tribune noted that very little evidence or explanation has been provided. ICE was in unmarked vehicles when they stopped Salgado Araujo, leading his son to believe his father may have thought he was being robbed rather than pulled over by federal agents, given his concerns about tools being stolen from his construction work.

No eyewitnesses have been contacted yet and no video footage has been obtained. Local leaders at a press conference pressed for body camera footage and any other recordings from the incident in Houston's East End, a heavily Latino neighborhood.

Salgado Araujo had three sons, including a teacher who graduated from the University of Houston and an engineer who attended Tufts University. He also had at least one grandson. He moved to Houston 35 years ago and built a construction company that builds homes in North Houston. Described as a simple man with a strict routine, he would rise early, pet his dog, kiss his wife who was his high school sweetheart, and end each day watching the sunset from his porch.

The president of Mexico says the country is pursuing legal measures. Two separate federal investigations are underway. Houston's mayor stated the city will not conduct its own investigation while federal probes continue, noting that local police were not involved. Local leaders have called for a city-led criminal investigation, though some council members indicated it would be difficult since only federal agents were present.

The incident has left the city in a stage of grief, with a vigil planned. Many residents are mourning the loss and the detention of three other men in the vehicle, including a family member. While protests have occurred elsewhere over immigration enforcement, the atmosphere in Houston suggests people may remain cautious about public actions amid state support for federal deportation efforts.
