The latest U.S. jobs report revealed surprising resilience in the labor market. Employers added 172,000 positions in May, extending a streak of three months with job growth. Revisions showed an additional 93,000 jobs in March and April beyond earlier estimates, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.3 percent.

Despite ongoing concerns related to the conflict in Iran, increasing prices, and advancements in artificial intelligence, the overall employment picture remains robust. White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett highlighted the positive momentum, noting two consecutive months of job gains exceeding 170,000 and significant upward revisions indicating a market operating at full capacity.

Economist Diane Swonk of KPMG pointed to local government hiring as a key driver, with over 50,000 new positions contributing to the upside surprise. Most gains were concentrated in the service sector, particularly leisure and hospitality, fueled by strong spending from higher wage earners and preparations for the upcoming World Cup in host cities. This marked the strongest hiring in that sector since early 2023.

However, Swonk noted persistent challenges, including elevated underemployment, rising durations of unemployment, and a declining quit rate at its lowest level since 2020. Workers appear hesitant to change jobs amid narrowing opportunities, and new college graduates face unemployment rates reminiscent of the early 2010s. Wage growth has benefited top earners but eroded purchasing power for the bottom two thirds of income groups, contributing to sticky service sector inflation expected above 4.2 percent.

Regarding interest rates, Swonk argued the Federal Reserve may need to consider hikes rather than cuts to address entrenched inflation, which disproportionately affects lower income households. She also addressed concerns over data reliability following leadership changes at statistical agencies, affirming the current figures while noting staffing shortages in federal roles at their lowest since 1966.
