In the eastern suburbs of India's Mumbai, six residents died when several buildings collapsed on Sunday amid the downpours that have halted travel and closed schools throughout the metropolis.

Landslides also struck the expressway linking Mumbai and Pune, leading to its shutdown and major traffic delays between the two urban centers.

Television footage captured broken construction debris scattered across roadways while water poured from a tunnel ceiling.

Air travel faced cancellations alongside long-distance rail services, including routes connecting Mumbai and Pune.

Local reports showed residents wading through flooded streets as schools and colleges remained closed on Monday.

Heavy rains have caused trees to fall on Mumbai roads, resulting in at least three deaths since late last month, according to local media.

The financial capital recorded over 100mm of rainfall, with certain areas receiving up to 161mm.

India's weather office forecast light rain for Monday across many parts of the national capital region.

Eight killed in landslides at Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh

In southeastern Bangladesh, officials reported that at least eight Rohingya Muslims, including children, died and others were injured early Monday when monsoon rains triggered multiple landslides at refugee camps.

The slides struck four camp locations, burying shelters under mud and debris as residents slept. A Bangladeshi man died and two relatives were hurt when a hillside gave way onto their home in Cox's Bazar, police said.

Police official Tumpa Das noted ongoing rain has raised the threat of further slides, with thousands of refugees still on unstable slopes.

"We are moving people out of high-risk areas as quickly as possible to prevent any more casualties," said Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, the Bangladeshi official in charge of refugee relief.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department predicts more heavy rain ahead, keeping authorities alert for additional landslides and flash floods.

Landslides and flooding often occur during monsoon season in the camps, frequently claiming lives and damaging infrastructure.

China's Nanning on top alert as Typhoon Maysak triggers reservoir breach

Nanning, capital of China's southwestern Guangxi region, elevated its flood-control response to the highest level as rivers and reservoirs rose with the arrival of Typhoon Maysak, state media reported on Monday.

Officials in the city of nearly 9 million people raised the emergency level from III to I due to extremely heavy rain, China Central Television reported.

One breach has occurred at a medium-sized reservoir in Nanning's Hengzhou, prompting evacuations, Xinhua news agency said.

Maysak made landfall in southern Hainan province on Friday, the first tropical cyclone to reach the Chinese mainland this year. It struck Vietnam on Sunday, which borders Guangxi.

The storm is expected to weaken further inland, yet remnants and seasonal rains will continue to bring heavy downpours to Guangxi, Guizhou, Hunan and surrounding areas, meteorologists said.
