Activists backing the Palestinian cause now confront potential multi-year prison sentences following their demonstration last September at Elbit Systems Germany, an Israeli arms manufacturer based in Ulm.

The five campaigners from Palestine Action Germany have been displayed to German media wearing restraints, kept inside glass enclosures throughout hearings, and isolated in solitary cells at different facilities for as long as 23 hours daily.

Though accused of membership in a criminal group and inflicting roughly one million euros in harm at the Israeli firm, none of the five has been convicted of any offense so far.

Referred to as the Ulm 5, the group includes individuals from the UK, Spain, Ireland, and Germany, specifically Daniel Tatlow-Devally, Zo Hailu, Crow Tricks, Vi Kovarbasic, and Leandra Rollo.

Their time in pre-trial custody has drawn attention to German judicial practices, the principle of innocence until proven guilty, and the nation's supportive stance toward Israel.

Proceedings, now scheduled through January 2027, take place at a secure facility inside Stammheim prison, where the accused are led in restraints and seated behind reinforced glass barriers.

"These five individuals will have endured 16 months of pre-trial detention by the time proceedings conclude," noted Mimi Tatlow-Golden, mother of 32-year-old Daniel.

Although the formal charges remain undisclosed, Tatlow-Golden indicated they contain claims of antisemitism.

In remarks to EUobserver on Tuesday (9 June), she noted that her husband's extended family is entirely Jewish.

"Discovering the prosecutor's attempt in the indictment to depict us as antisemitic, echoing a familiar and flawed narrative in German discourse, left me unsurprised yet deeply angered," she stated.

"It proved encouraging, moving, and even ironic to contrast that language with the strong support offered by my numerous Jewish relatives," she continued.
