This proceeding has held the attention of Germany for months, centering on a wealthy heiress facing charges and exposing one of the nation's largest recent intelligence controversies.

Christina Block, successor to a well-known steakhouse chain, stands accused of hiring an Israeli security company to violently seize her children from Denmark after a contentious custody dispute with her ex-husband.

Reports suggest ties to at least two former intelligence operatives from Germany and Israel.

In a recent development, probes into the matter uncovered material that resulted in the arrest this month of Germany's former intelligence head, August Hanning, on charges of treason and espionage.

Hanning's detention shocked the intelligence sector. Although separate from the Hamburg proceedings, he has rejected claims of participation in a prior attempt to take the children.

Media coverage surged in Germany when Christina Block and six co-defendants entered trial in a high-security Hamburg courtroom in July of last year.

Block House eateries, known for steak and baked potatoes, appear in numerous German communities. Their growth over five decades has turned Christina Block's father Eugen into a multimillionaire.

Authorities claim she and family attorney Andreas Costard arranged the forced removal of two of her children from the home of ex-husband Stephan Hensel in Denmark.

They assert the action was executed by a 36-year-old Israeli national identified only as Jonathan G along with five accomplices.

The seizure occurred amid New Year festivities in 2023-24 while the two children and their father watched fireworks, per the charges.

Prosecutors state several men confronted and assaulted Stephan Hensel before forcing the boy and girl, aged 10 and 13 at the time, into a vehicle.

Near the German border the group allegedly switched cars, covered the children's mouths with tape and bound the girl's hands.

They reportedly continued to Baden-Württemberg in a campervan. Authorities say the children remained held there until their mother collected them on 2 January 2024 and transported them to her Hamburg residence.

Christina Block, Andreas Costard and Jonathan G face charges of child abduction, serious bodily injury and unlawful confinement.

Block's partner, ex-TV sports host Gerhard Delling, and three additional individuals are accused of assisting the acts.

All deny the allegations except Jonathan G, who acknowledged his role but stated he believed it was a rescue mission.

The trial follows prolonged legal conflicts between Christina Block and Stephan Hensel regarding custody rights.

After their split all four children resided with their mother in Hamburg. Hensel, who remarried, later relocated to Denmark where the children visited regularly.

In 2021 the two youngest children visited their father in Denmark but were not returned to Hamburg as planned.

A Hamburg court granted custody to Christina and ordered the children's return. Yet in February 2023 a Danish court decided the boy and girl, though brought to Denmark unlawfully, could stay.

In May 2023 Hensel was charged with child abduction in a matter still unresolved.

He has alleged Christina used violence against the children, claims she rejects. She informed the court that Hensel sought retribution.

She also denied awareness of any abduction plans from Denmark. Her defense maintains the Israeli team acted independently.

She described the events to the court as a disaster and stated she never desired such an outcome.

David Barkay, leader of the Israeli security team who is not on trial but faces separate proceedings, testified that Christina Block and Costard were aware of the repatriation plan.

Barkay, identified by a witness as a former Mossad operative, indicated he withheld full details because he lacked trust in them.

The reported link to former German spy chief August Hanning concerns allegations of an earlier 2022 effort to remove the children from Denmark.

Authorities state Hanning organized security personnel who accompanied Christina Block to Denmark. His counsel rejects the claims. Hanning faces no charges in the current Block trial.

During a search of his residence investigators found evidence suggesting Hanning purchased around 2,000 documents from his former chief of staff and shared state secrets with foreign entities.

The specific foreign power and recipients remain unnamed, fueling extensive speculation.

Now 80, Hanning remains in custody on treason and espionage charges. His lawyer describes the pursuit as unjust and the accusations as baseless.

The trial against Christina Block is paused for two weeks amid multiple prior delays and extensions across the past 15 months.

The current postponement stems from the absence of a witness, Stephan Hensel's current wife.
