Leaders of the Group of Seven wealthy nations convene at a French lakeside resort on Monday shortly after the United States and Iran announced a preliminary accord to conclude their conflict.

Addressing next steps regarding Iran ranks among several topics the global leaders will tackle during the June 15-17 summit. The agenda also includes finding common ground on the Ukraine war, managing global economic imbalances, and securing critical minerals beyond the dominant supplier China.

US President Donald Trump is expected to reach Evian-les-Bains on Monday for the event. Global leaders remain cautious toward the United States, yet French officials expressed relief at securing his attendance after his early departure from last year's G7 summit in Canada.

Several G7 leaders have felt the impact of Trump's unpredictable actions on the world stage, which have disrupted the Middle East, international trade, and diplomatic efforts. These moves have prompted wider questions about US dedication to the postwar global order it helped create.

Trump plans meetings with Middle Eastern leaders and a working session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the summit.

The Zelensky session on Tuesday occurs as Russian advances in Ukraine have decelerated and Ukraine pursues additional military support from allies.

Zelensky's position has strengthened since Trump remarked in the Oval Office last year that Ukraine lacked leverage.

Yet he may encounter limited additional US backing, given Trump's focus on concluding the Iran conflict that has reduced his domestic approval.

US-Iran Ceasefire Agreement

G7 leaders will seek details on the US-Iran agreement. A memorandum of understanding is set to be signed officially on Friday in Switzerland, though the exact terms remain undisclosed.

Trump indicated that the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas shipments effectively closed by Iran for months, would reopen on Friday. He also stated he had directed an end to the US blockade of Iranian ports.

A statement from Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretariat noted that war and military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon, would cease permanently from Monday night.

Iran's deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi indicated that a broader pact would be negotiated over a 60-day ceasefire, encompassing sanctions relief for Iran. Iran's nuclear program will feature in those subsequent discussions, according to prior sources.

The United Arab Emirates, affected by the war, along with key mediators Qatar and Egypt, will also participate in the G7.

Macron's Diplomatic Opportunity

Trump will be welcomed on Monday by French President Emmanuel Macron. This summit marks a diplomatic highlight for Macron's second and final term, ending next year.

Macron faces perceptions of limited domestic influence yet retains international sway. He secured Trump's agreement for a formal dinner at the Palace of Versailles on Wednesday.

Macron has leveraged France's G7 presidency to advance action on global macroeconomic imbalances, a longstanding US priority, ahead of Washington assuming the G20 chair this year and the G7 next. France presents the matter as a collective duty, with China overproducing, the United States overconsuming, and Europe underinvesting.

Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Korea have received invitations to the G7 for these talks, while Macron has called on China to increase its domestic consumption.
