The European FCAS fighter jet initiative has come to an end. German and French officials confirmed on Monday that collaborative work on the aircraft will stop. Intended as the core element of the Future Combat Air System, this effort represented a major step in European defence ties, yet Airbus and Dassault could not settle on leadership roles for the program.

Salzburger Nachrichten notes that the end of this high-profile venture, valued at around 100 billion euros, highlights how several European nations still prioritize their own defence sectors. While the breakdown stemmed more from corporate rivalry between Dassault and Airbus than from absent political commitment, it marks a clear setback for efforts to lessen reliance on US defence options.

La Vanguardia describes the project as an example of the challenges in European teamwork. The planned system would have linked manned jets, drones, remote platforms and a secure military cloud for coordination across air, sea, land and space domains. Persistent national priorities over shared strategy have led to this outcome, dealing a blow to the Franco-German partnership and to hopes for greater defence independence.

Les Echos argues the initiative was flawed from the start because no side was prepared to make concessions. French manufacturers held on to independent development ideas, German firms resisted sharing rearmament funds, and broader European funding avoided multi-country ties despite the current favourable conditions for strengthening the continent's defence base.

Der Spiegel points to French demands as a key factor, noting that German leaders pursued talks and mediation yet faced insistence on sole control over construction and intellectual property. Yielding would have sidelined Airbus and eliminated Germany's independent fighter jet capabilities, an outcome viewed as unacceptable for industrial and security reasons.

Columnist Pierre Haski observes in France Inter that Paris sees Germany pursuing solo defence projects, including satellite networks and rocket systems, which shifts focus toward industrial strength. This dynamic challenges France's traditional role in EU defence matters and gives the FCAS failure added symbolic weight.

The Neue Zuercher Zeitung offers a measured view, stating that while drone and Combat Cloud work may continue under the FCAS label, the loss of the manned aircraft element represents a major hit. Europe faces ongoing pressure to cut dependence on American systems without a ready independent replacement in sight.
