The joint European FCAS fighter jet effort has collapsed. German and French authorities declared on Monday that work on the aircraft will cease. Designed as the centerpiece of the Future Combat Air System, the program represented a major step in European defense ties. Yet Airbus and Dassault failed to resolve disputes over leadership responsibilities.

"Merz exhausted every option to fix issues that surfaced earlier. The German side pursued talks with Paris, backed mediation and held direct discussions with Trappier. The French executive stayed firm, insisting on sole control of jet construction and intellectual property rights. Yielding would have relegated Airbus to supplier status and stripped Germany of fighter jet expertise permanently, an outcome unwise for both industry and security."

France Inter columnist Pierre Haski highlights rising French worries:

"Paris senses Germany favors solo action on multiple defense industry matters. Projects Germany pursues independently include satellite networks and rocket programs, focusing on industrial strength rather than pure military reach. France, which long viewed its defense sector as a key EU asset, now faces competition from its German counterpart, lending the FCAS outcome added symbolic weight."

The Neue Zuercher Zeitung offers a measured view:

"Ending the manned element of FCAS does not terminate the entire program, since partners plan to advance drones and the Combat Cloud while retaining the FCAS label. Still, the move delivers a major hit to Europe's defense industry. The continent needs to lessen reliance on American combat systems yet lacks a viable independent option."
