France and the United Kingdom have entered into an accord with Oman aimed at facilitating secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz, as outlined in a joint statement released by the leaders of the UK and France on Friday.

The announcement from French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer explained that this partnership seeks to guarantee safety for navigation within Oman's sovereign territorial waters.

Under the terms of the agreement, Macron and Starmer indicated readiness to activate the wider Multinational Military Mission in order to uphold freedom of navigation across the waterway.

"The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical channel for the worldwide economy. Restoring secure transit for vessels from every nation through the Strait represents a global priority," the statement highlighted.

The two countries also confirmed their mutual dedication to preserving stability across the Middle East and their intent to sustain joint work with allied nations in defense of navigation rights and international legal standards.

Starmer, Omani sultan met to discuss Hormuz efforts

On Thursday, Starmer held talks with Oman’s Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik Al regarding initiatives focused on the Strait of Hormuz.

Per a press release from Starmer’s office, the leaders also addressed the need to provide reassurance to the shipping sector concerning safe transit through the strait.

The two leaders committed to close coordination on the matter, with Starmer underscoring that Oman’s involvement is essential for reestablishing secure navigation in the area.

Starmer further conveyed appreciation for Omani mediation that helped enable the recently signed US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding and expressed continued solidarity with Oman.
