A fresh wave of school demonstrations has swept across France. Official counts show 160,000 people marched in cities nationwide on Tuesday, while organizers reported 480,000 participants. Several universities were also shut down by the actions. Additional rallies scheduled for Saturday will include university students and labor unions. European media outlets examine the drivers behind the unrest and its spread to wider groups.

Young people seek influence over their future, writes Le Quotidien:

The world has shifted and grown far more competitive than in the late 2000s. Conditions have worsened across the board. This extends beyond schooling. Employment in certain fields has turned into a harsh arena where staff serve as replaceable parts, used intensely then cast aside when outpaced by artificial intelligence. Young people in France are declaring that they have had enough, and their Belgian counterparts have joined recent street actions. They seek fair employment and reject being pulled into an unwanted future. The cause is worthy, yet its result stays unclear.

Erasmus student Calypso Baroin shares her view on ERR Online:

Media reports often highlight violence, immigration and resulting harm. As a young French student familiar with the issues behind the unrest, I offer another angle. I do not ask Estonian journalists to back every protester demand or overlook violence and damage. Still, coverage should address the underlying causes and the specific requests from these young people. When police or officials act excessively, that too deserves note instead of attention fixed only on dramatic images.

The protest unites those who feel overlooked, observes L'Humanite:

After hearing stark accounts from teens left without teachers and shown little respect, the government can no longer advance its spending cuts with the same ease. It carries blame for years of harm to public education. These determined young people deserve thanks for exposing the damage so clearly. They also merit credit for linking their fight to others hurt by Macron policies, including rising costs, hardship and growing bias against foreigners. This energy might alter the course. A strong social push could return focus to fairness, fair taxation and environmental safeguards.

The Suddeutsche Zeitung asks why similar actions are absent in Germany:

Complaints about poor school conditions have persisted for years with little change. Teacher shortages affect every region. Even the German education ministers conference, which does not minimize the issue, projects 50,000 unfilled posts by 2035. Today many schools lack staff for basic lessons, let alone support for inclusion or language needs. Some buildings are so neglected that safety nets cover their walls. The events in France prompt a call to German teachers and students to speak out for their rights without violence. The moment has arrived.
