The European Union has proposed measures to ease the reduction of greenhouse gas emission limits for businesses, aiming for a significant update to its climate strategies.

These adjustments would loosen the emissions trading system (ETS) regulations, allowing companies additional time to cut their carbon emissions beyond initial timelines.

Certain sectors might receive emission allowances extending to 2038 rather than 2034, provided they invest in efforts to lower carbon footprints.

Approval from EU member states and legislators is still required, potentially taking up to a year.

EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra noted, "We are adopting a more business-friendly and, may I say so, savvy approach."

The European Commission explained that these modifications would align the ETS with the target of cutting carbon emissions by 90% by 2040 relative to 1990 levels.

Launched in 2005, the ETS serves as the primary mechanism for the EU to limit greenhouse gas releases.

Criticism has arisen from several member countries, notably Italy, which views the system as an indirect tax contributing to elevated energy costs.

The system mandates that industries and power facilities purchase permits for each tonne of CO2 emitted, encouraging shifts to cleaner methods.

Permits can be traded or purchased additionally, with some allocated free to aid competition against non-EU firms without carbon pricing.

Annual permit releases are capped to ensure emission reductions.

The Commission suggests reducing the cap-lowering rate to about 3.7% starting 2031, then 1.7% from 2036, compared to the current 4.3%.

Free permits would continue until 2038 instead of 2034, before a carbon border adjustment for imports in specific areas.

Up to 80% of free permits could be provided initially to firms committing to decarbonization investments in Europe, with the rest upon completion.

Polish climate minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska indicated Poland seeks further easing of the rules.

"This marks the first instance of a relaxed position instead of stricter measures - a major win for Poland, though we aim for additional changes," she remarked.

However, Green party representatives expressed concerns. German MEP Michael Bloss warned of "enormous climate pollution" leading to diminished living standards for future generations.
