Life in Moscow can appear routine at times. This particular Thursday morning proved otherwise.

A Ukrainian drone strike had targeted an oil refinery in the south-eastern part of the city, creating an otherworldly scene even from afar.

Dense plumes of smoke rose from the site, casting a deep shadow across the urban horizon like an immense dark veil.

Beyond the striking visuals, the local response near the facility stood out just as much.

With little notice of the towering smoke, a fisherman remained by a nearby pond, focused on his line and continuing his activity undisturbed.

Across the way at the playground, youngsters enjoyed themselves on the swings without interruption.

Locals moved in and out of a nearby supermarket, treating the day like any other.

It became clear then that my understanding of normalcy in Moscow required adjustment.

For an extended period the conflict in Ukraine seemed remote to residents of the capital. Many chose to ignore its existence, yet this grows more difficult as the battle lines draw nearer.

Over the preceding eighteen months, residents have awakened to reports of targeted killings of military leaders and drone incursions aimed at the city itself.

In many ways, the unusual has settled into everyday life.

The assault that day ranked among the most significant aerial operations against the Moscow area since the full-scale invasion began.

Beyond the refinery, commercial sites and housing blocks sustained damage as well. The regional governor noted that an eight-year-old girl lost her life in a blaze triggered by one of the drones.

"The event does not come as a complete shock," notes Slava, whose apartment overlooks the refinery. "Still, the scale of this particular strike caught me off guard."

"Explosions echoed and smoke filled the view. It resembled scenes from films. I watched it unfold from my window."

Yet another resident, Nadezhda, found nothing ordinary about the developments.

"Victory in World War Two took four years despite limited supplies for our troops," she explained.

"Now resources abound, yet this conflict persists. The situation leaves me stunned."

How might officials address concerns from individuals like Nadezhda, who question the prolonged nature of the operation and its arrival in their own streets?

Authorities often point to Western involvement as a factor extending the fighting, citing support from European nations and Nato for Kyiv.

On Thursday, however, President Vladimir Putin offered no remarks on the drone incident. Russian television coverage gave it scant attention.

The next day's newspaper accounts revealed a consistent theme, possibly aimed at shaping domestic views.

The essence came across as: Ukraine endures greater hardship despite the impact here.

"Our operations inflict heavier losses on Ukraine than we experience in return," stated the strongly aligned Komsomolskaya Pravda.

"Efforts to limit Ukrainian military capacity prove more substantial and successful than incoming strikes," observed the tabloid Moskovsky Komsomolets.

Government outlet Rossiyskaya Gazeta echoed the point: "Actions against Ukrainian defense industries exceed in strength those faced by Russians at present."

"Assaults on military-linked infrastructure yield greater outcomes than the challenges encountered domestically," added business paper Kommersant.

Once the Kremlin responded, the tone aligned closely.

"Attention should turn to imagery from Ukrainian cities," press secretary Dmitry Peskov advised.

"Visuals of our forces' achievements stand out, and such operations will proceed."

Nothing indicates that Ukrainian drone activity has altered Putin's approach. Recent statements suggest continued commitment to the campaign, with confidence in eventual success through sustained effort.

Nevertheless, extended Ukrainian operations, especially against fuel sites, appear to strain the economy. Reports of fuel scarcity and price increases have surfaced in various regions.

In this evolving routine, further drone activity seems anticipated in Moscow.

"The 18 June strike on the region marks the start of more to come," forecasted Moskovsky Komsomolets.

"No direct action lies within our power," remarked one woman while gazing at the smoke overhead.

"Leadership must determine the path forward. Our role remains that of observers."
