For years Arthur Kermalvezen, born to a sperm donor, pictured possible fathers in daily life. He wondered if his teacher or a stranger on the bus might be the one, and the uncertainty left him deeply frustrated.

As an adult he met Audrey, also donor-conceived from Paris, at an activist event in 2010. Their instant bond raised a serious question: was the attraction romantic or possibly genetic?

With only two sperm banks operating in Paris at the time and many donors making repeated contributions, the chance they shared a father was real. Before committing to a shared future they needed proof they were not half-siblings, yet French rules on testing and donor privacy made answers nearly impossible to obtain.

Under French law only a licensed researcher, physician or judge may order and oversee a genetic test. Possession of an at-home kit can bring fines exceeding 3500 euros. Major testing firms therefore do not sell kits inside the country. Backers of the 1994 statute argue it protects private genetic data and avoids sudden family conflicts, yet Arthur notes France is the sole European nation that treats such tests as criminal.

Instant Connection

Audrey had already become a bioethics lawyer when her parents revealed her donor origins. She knew French statutes protected donor anonymity even after death, but she had been conceived in 1979 before those rules existed. While researching others born before 1994 she discovered Arthur's book about his search for biological roots. His words captured feelings she had never fully expressed. Both enjoyed loving families yet felt drawn to questions about their unknown donors.

When they met the chemistry was immediate, yet so was the obstacle. They could not move from friendship to romance until they learned whether their fathers were the same man, and officials refused to help.

Seeking Answers

After months of effort they located a southern doctor who performed a test for 900 euros in cash and reported they were unrelated. The result brought little peace because the physician had broken the law by sharing it. Audrey, determined to stay legal, rejected the idea of ordering a home kit through unofficial channels. Instead she began filing court challenges in 2010, asking whether her donor was alive and still wanted anonymity, how many donations he had made, and whether Arthur could be a half-sibling. All appeals failed. Three years later the couple married anyway.

In 2015 France's highest administrative court turned down Audrey's last case. Shortly before their first child arrived, a physician agreed to check records without revealing details to the couple. The records showed the donors were born in different years, so they could not be the same person. The information was vital yet obtained only because the doctor bent the rules.

Arthur remained uneasy, so the pair finally ordered a home DNA test. Campaigners estimate more than a million French citizens have done the same by using foreign friends or forwarding addresses. The results confirmed they were not related.

DNA Revelations

The tests opened new paths. On Christmas Day 2017 Arthur contacted his donor after three decades of speculation. Audrey received an even greater surprise: one of her matches was Sophie, a woman she had represented in court while both fought for similar rights. Audrey learned Sophie was her biological sister.

The couple had tested alongside eight other donor-conceived activists. Four of the ten shared the same donor, underscoring the real risk of half-sibling relationships. Years later an American match led Audrey to her donor Philippe, who had already passed away. Her mother wrote to his family expressing gratitude for his gift. The relatives welcomed Audrey, and she viewed photos and videos of Philippe while learning medical details she had long sought.

Their advocacy helped change French law so people conceived after April 2025 can access donor identities at adulthood. For now France remains one of the few European countries still banning at-home DNA tests, and Audrey continues the broader campaign. Every person deserves to know their origins and history, she says.
