Eurovision Song Contest champion Dara has disclosed that she nearly withdrew from the event on two separate occasions before securing Bulgaria's first triumph.

The Bangaranga vocalist explained to BBC Newsbeat that she thought about pulling out to safeguard her well-being.

Dara described feeling overwhelmed after selection as her nation's representative, concerned that her recent ADHD diagnosis might worsen amid the Vienna preparations.

"My body responded that way," the 27-year-old noted, "and it took three hours to settle down."

Dara claimed the Eurovision title with an unprecedented points lead in May, even though she started as a long shot.

Her act blended refinement with eccentricity, full of character and featuring one of the contest's most memorable melodies.

Yet Bulgaria's groundbreaking achievement might not have materialized if the singer had acted on her withdrawal intentions.

"Initially I declined due to several contract issues that concerned me," Dara stated.

Already a known musician, challenges mounted following her announcement as Bulgaria's first entrant since 2022.

"Right away I sensed I had erred and lacked merit," she added. "I refused to endanger my mental state beyond recovery."

When asked by commentator Graham Norton for advice to future participants based on his 2024 experience, Olly Alexander suggested seeking strong professional support.

Dara credited therapy received after her ADHD diagnosis with readying her for the competition.

"My therapist aided me in managing crowds," she said. "Her guidance proved effective, allowing me to stay centered throughout."

She relied on breathwork, sketching, writing, and mindfulness to maintain balance.

"Eurovision looms large as the pinnacle for performers," Dara observed. "Still, I felt steadier and more assured onstage than ever."

Vienna reserved its highlight for Dara at the close, marking one of the contest's most decisive victories.

"I stayed composed," Dara recalled as votes arrived from around the globe.

"I embraced the moment and kept thinking, 'Thank you God for this stage and these supporters.'"

Once the celebration ended in Austria, Bulgaria's broadcaster BNT quickly named Sofia as the 2027 host.

Dara received a warm welcome back in the capital, where she will contribute to next year's plans.

Following her Eurovision legacy, Dara now prioritizes personal goals closer to home.

"Someday I hope for a family," she said. "Health matters more than professional achievements.

"Success as a person ranks high on my priorities."
