Carolina Hurricanes top Golden Knights for hockey's 2026 Stanley Cup as Staal earns playoff MVP honors

The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 on Sunday to secure their second Stanley Cup championship and first since 2006.

Taylor Hall, Jackson Blake, and Nikolaj Ehlers provided the offense for Carolina while Brandon Bussi made 22 saves in the shutout as the visiting team wrapped up the NHL's best-of-seven series in six games.

"A state of shock," Hall, suiting up for his seventh NHL club, said after claiming the Stanley Cup at last. "Your mind drifts the past few days and imagines what it could feel like out here, and it exceeds every expectation.

"My career has followed many paths, yet landing here alongside these teammates and finishing in this manner is remarkable."

Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal, who tallied in five of the six Stanley Cup Final contests, received the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the league playoffs.

At 37, Staal became the oldest recipient of the award.

"This is incredible as I have chased it ever since our opening triumph," noted Staal after arriving via trade in Carolina during June 2012.

"You aim to capture it repeatedly. And what a sensation, what a contest. The group fought hard today. My word, so many standout individual plays."

The 34-year-old Hall, selected first overall in the 2010 NHL Draft, supplied all the offense Carolina required when he accepted a long feed from defenseman Jaccob Slavin and unleashed a wrist shot past Carter Hart on the glove side less than four minutes into the contest.

Carolina netminder Brandon Bussi, acquired off waivers last October after ranking third on the Florida Panthers' depth chart, protected the lead via a diving stop on Pavel Dorofeyev moments before the first period ended with Vegas on a power play.

Blake extended the advantage in the middle frame after taking a pass from the corner by Logan Stankoven and firing a close-range snap shot that deflected off the stick of Vegas forward Mitch Marner.

The Golden Knights nearly closed the gap on a power play past the midpoint of the third period, yet Jack Eichel, facing an out-of-position Bussi without a stick, struck the crossbar.

Vegas emptied its net in the final minutes for an extra skater, but despite launching repeated attempts they could not solve Bussi. Ehlers then sealed the outcome with an empty-net goal.

The victory completed an impressive postseason for the Hurricanes, who entered as the top seed in the Eastern Conference and posted a dominant 16-3 playoff mark, the second-best record since the NHL adopted four best-of-seven rounds in 1987.

Vegas, which had surprised the top-seeded Colorado Avalanche via a four-game sweep in the Western Conference Final, had sought its second Stanley Cup following its initial triumph three years earlier.
