Jean-Luc Crucke has held the post of Belgian minister for climate and mobility in Bart De Wever's government since February 2025, representing the centrist French-speaking party Les Engages. He spoke with EUobserver in Brussels on 30 June about Belgium's part in EU climate policy and the simplification steps that could help it succeed.

Is the EU stepping back from its Green Deal pledges?

No, I do not see Europe retreating. It follows a steady path forward. Still, after some time under the Green Deal, it makes sense to review and refine certain rules. It is also reasonable to ease administrative steps where they have grown too heavy. The requests from industry therefore appear sensible to me.

We should not mix simplification with deregulation. Our focus must stay on keeping the same targets while easing the load on companies so they can deliver results without excessive strain. The goals themselves stay fixed. Making compliance smoother for everyone involved serves both the economy and the climate.

Do you feel confident Belgium can reach net zero in step with other EU countries?

Climate issues cross borders by nature and require joint solutions. Europe sets common rules, yet its procedures can be intricate. Complexity alone must not block progress. Belgium's National Energy and Climate Plan, already approved by the EU, offers a clear route. Because many decisions rest outside federal control, I remain measured and stress that all parties should follow the guidance Europe has given. Greater coordination inside Belgium would help everyone move in the same direction at little extra cost.
