China declared on Friday an immediate temporary prohibition on helium exports, prompted by the restart of hostilities in the Middle East that could cause fresh deficits in the gas essential for chip fabrication.

Earlier this year, the conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran resulted in helium shortfalls, affecting firms worldwide, notably in China where the artificial intelligence sector depends more on homegrown chips for model development and operation. Helium plays a key role in thermal regulation during semiconductor creation.

This restriction on helium represents the newest instance of Beijing acting to avert shortfalls in essential materials through export limitations. Comparable steps have been taken previously regarding fuel, fertilizers, and sulphuric acid.

Additionally, China seeks to enhance its internal chip production abilities and lessen reliance on advanced Nvidia semiconductors subject to US export restrictions.

China's Role in Helium Re-exportation

Despite initiatives to increase local output, China remains largely reliant on imported helium.

Nevertheless, the export prohibition may further strain worldwide availability since Chinese firms have grown as middlemen, bringing in helium from Russia and sending portions abroad to markets such as Europe.

Experts calculate that China brings in approximately 85 percent or higher of its helium needs. Qatar provides a significant portion of global helium production and has delivered over half of China's imports lately.

Helium comes from natural gas deposits with elevated helium levels and cannot be rapidly produced via alternative industrial methods.

Within semiconductor manufacturing, it serves purposes including wafer cooling, plasma etching, chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, lithography assistance, and leak identification.
