A hostage situation with bomb threats is ongoing at a Chase Bank in Bakersfield, California, according to a Tuesday statement from the Bakersfield Police Department on social media.

Officers arrived at the bank around 1 p.m. after a man reportedly locked himself inside with several people. Authorities indicate he has issued bomb threats and appears to have a device attached to his body.

SWAT units, the bomb squad, crisis negotiators, a drone team, K9 officers, and federal partners have reached the scene to safeguard the public and pursue the safest possible outcome.

The Bakersfield Police crisis negotiation team, working with FBI negotiators, has established contact with the suspect.

The FBI Sacramento office stated it is aware of the incident near 17th Street and Chester Avenue in Bakersfield and is deploying resources to assist local police while urging the public to avoid the area.

Two hostages released while others remain inside

As of 9 p.m., two hostages have been freed, though several people are still inside the bank.

BPD Sergeant Eric Celedon said the remaining individuals inside the building continue to be in good health.

Local officials have issued notices regarding street closures, lockdowns, and safety measures. No arrests have occurred, and residents are asked to stay away from downtown to let emergency teams operate safely.

Mayor Karen Goh said officials continue to monitor the situation and remain concerned for the safety of everyone involved.

The mayor added that the public can best assist by avoiding the area and giving negotiators and trained professionals space to perform their duties.
