Australia and Fiji sign defense alliance as regional tensions rise

Australia and Fiji formalized a significant defense agreement on Monday that obligates each nation to assist the other in the event of an attack, amid growing efforts by China to broaden its regional presence.

The Ocean of Peace Alliance represents Fiji's initial formal alliance and positions the Pacific island nation as Australia's fourth official ally following the United States, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

"The Ocean of Peace Alliance establishes mutual defense commitments, and there is no greater duty than supporting one another during times of crisis," Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remarked during a joint press event with Fijian counterpart Sitiveni Rabuka in Suva.

"An attack on Fiji from an outside force would trigger Australia's full support for Fiji and for its sovereignty," Albanese said.

The security arrangement emerges as China extends its economic reach and security partnerships across the Pacific. Australia has described its position as one of ongoing competition with China in the area and has pursued measures to limit Beijing's sway via defense pacts with Pacific states.

Australia finalized a security accord with Vanuatu the previous week, designating itself as the preferred partner for security and law enforcement matters.

The Ocean of Peace Alliance mandates consultations on security issues and requires action to address shared threats if either party faces attack, mirroring a prior defense agreement Australia concluded with Papua New Guinea.

The treaty provisions allow additional Pacific nations to participate provided they advance the accord's objectives and support regional security.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon indicated on Monday that his country would consider joining the framework.

Australia and Fiji broaden economic and security ties

The two nations also executed the Vuvale Union to enhance economic and security collaboration, supported by A$1 billion in Australian funding over the coming decade, Albanese noted.

"Together these agreements mark one of the most important initiatives Australia has pursued in its relations with any nation," Albanese stated.

Rabuka expressed that he anticipated no objections from China to the pacts, even though Beijing has previously voiced concerns over Australian security arrangements in the Pacific.

"It does not threaten Fiji's relationship with China nor Australia's relationship with China," Rabuka said.

"We have made it very clear in the past, your enemies are not necessarily my enemies."

Albanese is scheduled to travel to the Solomon Islands on Tuesday for talks with counterpart Matthew Wale on a broad strategic treaty.

Australia deems China's missile test plans destabilizing

The pact announcement coincides with reports that China intends to conduct a test launch of a nuclear capable ballistic missile carrying a dummy warhead into the South Pacific within the next day, according to Australian media, with regional diplomats informed in advance.

The Chinese embassy in Australia offered no immediate comment on the matter.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated on Monday that China had informed the government of the planned sea based missile test, characterizing the action as destabilizing for the region.

"Australia has been clear that this proposed test is in the context of a rapid military buildup by China, which is lacking in the transparency and reassurance as to intent that the region expects," Wong told reporters during a press conference in Suva.
