Alan Greenspan, praised as an outstanding Federal Reserve chairman upon his 2006 retirement yet criticized for the major financial crisis that emerged shortly afterward, died on Monday at age 100, according to NBC News.

Greenspan, who shaped American economic policy during his time leading the Fed from August 1987 until January 2006, passed away at home due to Parkinson’s Disease complications, NBC reported based on comments from his wife Andrea Mitchell, the network's chief Washington correspondent.

Greenspan guided the second-longest period of economic growth in American history, featuring a continuous decade of expansion from March 1991 to March 2001. His choice to allow the economy to expand without raising rates, despite concerns over potential inflation that did not occur, supported extended prosperity and brought him celebrity-like acclaim as an economic expert.

That period highlighted his accurate assessment that a productivity increase in the mid-1990s would prevent inflation from rising.

His insight at that time continues to guide policymakers and has been referenced by former Fed chair Jerome Powell as a case where judgment surpassed standard economic forecasts.

Nevertheless, the former jazz musician's skills in monetary policy faced scrutiny later, with critics arguing that his approaches contributed to asset price surges and helped set the stage for the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

"I think the high praise just before the financial crisis was not entirely warranted, and I think the heavy criticism he received afterward was also not completely fair," said Stephen Oliner, a former senior Fed official.

Greenspan's quick action during 1987 market crash

Greenspan, who developed a passion for mathematics via baseball statistics, earned early recognition for his effective handling of the Black Monday stock market crash in 1987, only two months into his role.

He also navigated the US economy through the 1990-91 recession, the 1997-1998 Asian and Russian financial issues, the dot-com stock collapse in 2000, and the economic challenges following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Along the way, biographer Sebastian Mallaby noted, he emerged as a skilled Washington insider capable of guiding presidents and officials toward choices he preferred, often without their full awareness.

At the Fed's Jackson Hole event in 2005, two prominent economists described him as possibly the finest central banker ever.

Yet when the housing price surge that developed in his last four years in office collapsed, it damaged his strong reputation along with the worldwide economy.

Regardless of Greenspan's strengths at the time, his successors moved the Fed toward new strategies, introducing crisis response measures for issues like zero interest rates that Greenspan had not faced, and changing from limited communications to more regular speeches, a fixed inflation goal, and routine press events.

Beyond questions about monetary policy, critics faulted Greenspan, a strong supporter of minimal financial market oversight, for a non-interventionist stance that permitted banks to place risky bets on housing.

Greenspan later expressed being "shocked" that he had misjudged bankers' self-interest as a safeguard against actions threatening their own institutions.

"Those of us who have looked to the self-interest of lending institutions to protect shareholders' equity, myself included, are in a state of shocked disbelief," he told the House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in 2008.

But as an apology in Washington, it did not satisfy his strongest detractors.

Some economists also believed the chairman, who openly identified as Republican, harmed his perceived independence by endorsing tax cuts in 2001 from President George W. Bush, though he collaborated effectively with Democratic President Bill Clinton.

The second-longest-serving Fed chair after William McChesney Martin, Greenspan was initially appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 and reappointed by Presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.

He was 80 when departing the Fed in 2006, yet transitioned easily into consulting and advising through his firm, Greenspan Associates, providing economic forecasts for substantial fees.

At the Fed, Greenspan built on the achievements of predecessor Paul Volcker, who ended the high inflation of the late 1970s and early 1980s. In his final years at the central bank, Greenspan focused more on deflation risks than on returning high inflation.

The ten-year growth in the 1990s was driven partly by a major stock increase that, in 1996, Greenspan indicated might show "irrational exuberance." He later distanced himself from that remark, noting it was not his place to question investors.

Greenspan was frequently seen as the second most influential figure in the country after the president, given the central bank's power to affect the economy via short-term rate adjustments.

Thoughtful, serious, and reserved, he presented his positions through indirect testimonies and speeches that received extensive analysis. He once cautioned an economists' group that he devoted significant effort to avoiding excessive clarity.

"What I've learned at the Fed is a new language called 'Fed speak.' We learn to mumble with great incoherence," he said.

He could express himself so indirectly that his wife, Andrea Mitchell, noted she "just didn't get it" during his initial marriage proposals. The pair dated for 12 years before marrying in April 1997, the second marriage for each.

Greenspan noted he did his clearest thinking in the bathtub, taking baths that could last two hours while reviewing reports and drafting speeches and testimony.

Music came first

Born in New York City on March 6, 1926, Greenspan was the sole child of Rose and Herbert Greenspan. His parents separated when he was young, and he grew up in a modest apartment in New York's Washington Heights neighborhood with his mother and grandparents.

Greenspan's initial passion was music, and he studied for two years at New York's Juilliard School on the clarinet. He performed briefly with a swing band as a saxophone player before shifting to economics studies at New York University.

In his early years, Greenspan associated with novelist Ayn Rand, who promoted free markets and profit motives in works such as Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead.

Before his Fed tenure, he led the Council of Economic Advisers under President Gerald Ford in the 1970s. He also operated an economics consulting firm, Townsend-Greenspan and Co., for many years.

When Greenspan replaced Volcker, some questioned whether he could match his decisive, cigar-smoking predecessor.

But Greenspan demonstrated his capability by injecting liquidity into markets to stabilize the October 1987 stock crash. His prompt response, now viewed as a model for crisis management, was credited with preventing a recession.
