A court has imposed a life sentence on a man convicted of steering his vehicle into a crowd during a Munich rally last year, resulting in two fatalities.

The individual, identified solely as Farhad N under German privacy rules, is a 25-year-old Afghan citizen. Prosecutors established that he intentionally rammed his Mini into a trade union event attended by roughly 1,400 participants in the city center on 13 February 2025.

His actions struck a 37-year-old woman along with her two-year-old daughter, both of whom succumbed to injuries at a hospital soon after. Over 40 additional individuals sustained wounds, several in critical condition.

The incident formed part of a series of events in Germany that have intensified far-right discussions concerning migration policies.

The Munich Higher Regional Court determined the crime carried exceptional gravity, substantially limiting prospects for parole eligibility after the initial 15 years behind bars.

Convictions included two murder counts, 23 attempted murder charges, and multiple further offenses such as serious bodily harm.

The judge noted that Farhad N aimed to target and eliminate random individuals in Germany as a reaction to conditions in Islamic nations.

"Through this act the defendant aimed to perform a deed acceptable to God and to demonstrate his worth as a devout Muslim before Allah, himself and his relatives," the judge stated.

Prosecutors indicated the defendant viewed the assault as essential retaliation against United States and Western involvement in Gaza and Afghanistan, with fury, letdown and resentment also contributing factors.

The defense sought a 15-year term plus commitment to a psychiatric facility, citing evidence of schizophrenia symptoms in their client.
