Xpeng is advancing swiftly following the launch of its own operations in Australia, with a new model captured during testing ahead of its planned local debut in late 2026.

Images taken by this reporter show a heavily disguised Xpeng G9L being evaluated in Melbourne. This large SUV will feature three rows of seating and offer either fully electric or range-extender powertrains.

Local pricing and specifications remain undisclosed, yet Xpeng ANZ has stated the vehicle will reach showrooms in November 2026. It forms part of five Xpeng models scheduled for introduction over the coming six months.

The G9L has not received an official unveiling, though details emerged in May 2026 through Chinese regulatory documents. Reports indicate that much of this data will carry over to Australian versions.

Dimensions include a length of 5120mm, width of 1999mm, height of 1782mm, and a 3100mm wheelbase. These figures align closely with rivals such as the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90.

Overseas markets will see the electric G9L offered in single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive forms. The all-wheel drive variant provides 160kW from the front motor and 270kW from the rear.

The range-extender version is also expected in both rear- and all-wheel drive layouts, supported by a 110kW 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that acts as a generator.

Complete battery details are still pending, but overseas sources point to a 63.3kWh lithium iron phosphate pack in the range-extender model, delivering up to 325km of electric-only range under WLTC testing.

Xpeng ANZ plans to offer both powertrain choices locally, though it is unclear whether rear- and all-wheel drive variants will both be introduced. The G9L will launch alongside models such as the L03 mid-size SUV, the larger L05, and the X9 people mover.

The brand also intends to introduce an even larger SUV called the GX, although local timing for that vehicle has not been confirmed.

This wave of launches follows Xpeng taking direct control of distribution in Australia this year. Previously, independent firm TrueEV handled sales after introducing the brand late in 2024.

The companies are now engaged in legal proceedings over the change, after TrueEV was removed as exclusive distributor less than two years into a five-year agreement.

To assist current owners, Xpeng ANZ has confirmed it will uphold cashback commitments for vehicles bought through TrueEV and aims to grow its dealer network from 25 to 50 outlets during 2027.
