Enthusiasts often ask why Volkswagen offers the performance GTI and R badges exclusively on the Golf in the US market. The explanation turns out to be quite logical.

Europe has seen GTI versions of models like the Lupo, Polo, Scirocco, and Up. Latin America received GTI editions of the Gol, Parati, and Pointer. R variants have appeared on the Arteon, Golf Cabrio, Passat, Scirocco, Tiguan, Touareg, and T-Roc in various regions.

To understand the US approach, Motor1 interviewed Serban Boldea, Director of Product Planning at Volkswagen of America. He clarified the standards required for these badges:

'If we bring a vehicle to market with this badge and we are going to stand behind it, then it has to be the real thing. When R is put on a vehicle, it cannot just be some plastic and a sticker.'

Boldea avoided discussing upcoming models but assured that efforts continue to introduce more engaging options in the US:

'We are working to make sure that the fun to drive is in a Volkswagen. We are looking at where we take the brand with fun to drive being an essential element of it.'

Volkswagen unveiled the ID. Polo GTI in Europe as its first electric model to carry the GTI name. Like prior examples, this vehicle will not reach American buyers. Volkswagen of America remains committed to preserving the integrity of these designations.

'If you do not see a GTI in other vehicles in the US, it is because the whole concept of a GTI - the lightness, the simplicity, the fun - is more than just a name badge. A GTI comes with a particular seat, red accents, and drivability. It is beyond the visual. We will only bring a car to market named GTI if we all internally feel that you will drive it and say yep, that is a GTI.'

Boldea noted that he would never want the term insincere applied to any GTI model.

He mentioned the Passat GT from 2018, which featured a 3.6-liter VR6 engine producing 280 horsepower along with sportier looks, a dual-clutch transmission, and adjusted suspension. He described it as a cool car but not the complete honest package found in a true GTI.

The ID. Polo GTI faces additional hurdles beyond size and body style. Boldea also critiqued electric vehicles in general, including high-performance examples with simulated shifting such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

'Oftentimes, when I bring a competitor home, I get excited to show my wife or daughter. But I get an eye roll. The reality with these manually shifting EVs, they are cool during the test drive and your three close friends, but for your everyday commute, I could not wait to get back to my ID. Buzz.'

Boldea does not anticipate simulated gears becoming common in most electric vehicles.

'In performance-oriented vehicles like a Golf R or a GTI, you may see those kinds of developments. You may see these kinds of automatic transmissions that mimic a manual. For the majority of the market, the brilliance of the EV is no transmission at all: no gears, no shifting, nothing. Do I think there is a market? Yes I do. But I think it is going to be a small, ultra-specific enthusiast customer.'

Although the ID. Polo GTI will not include simulated gears, an upcoming Clubsport version is planned to incorporate this element.
