Overinflation Poses Similar Risks

Insufficient air harms tires, but excess pressure brings its own dangers. A National Center for Biotechnology Information study confirms overinflated tires are equally vulnerable to rupture. Elevated pressure overtaxes internal components, compromising structural strength and heightening burst risk from potholes or debris.

Overinflation shrinks the contact patch, slashing grip on slick, wet, or icy surfaces. It also results in a harsh ride and uneven wear, evident when center treads degrade quicker than edges. Regardless, such tires remain hazardous and susceptible to curb or pothole damage, just like their underinflated counterparts.

Handling a Blowout on the Road

A front tire failure sends tremors through the steering, while a rear one vibrates the chassis. Survival hinges on composure in either case - stay calm to restore vehicle control.

Grip the wheel firmly and ease off the throttle immediately upon hearing the pop. Slow down steadily while keeping the vehicle straight with subtle steering inputs. Resist hard braking, which could worsen instability. Instead, guide safely to the shoulder when conditions allow.

Once stopped, activate hazards, seek roadside aid, or fit the spare. Prevention starts with weekly pressure inspections or checks before long hauls, tire rotations every 5,000 to 7,000 miles by a pro, and replacements when treads hit the 2/32-inch legal limit.
