Ford has stated this week that it holds no regrets over ending sedan production in the U.S., while also indicating interest in developing a Mustang sedan. A four-door variant, especially one featuring a liftback design on the Mustang platform, would likely deliver strong performance. Given that the Mustang Mach-E serves as an electric crossover, the sedan could emerge as an EV, though the chance remains that Ford might apply the Mustang name to an all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid.

Ford has yet to confirm plans for a Mustang sedan officially and has only mentioned interest in expanding the Mustang family, with a four-door version listed as one possibility. Since discussions are ongoing, it remains unclear whether any such model would originate from the S650 platform. Engineering a vehicle for multiple roles proves simpler when planned from the initial design phase.

I hold limited expectations for a Mustang sedan appearing in the near term. Still, I hope the concept advances and receives an early reveal, so my caution on timing should not suggest opposition to Ford creating a sedan based on the Mustang.

As hopes build for Ford to deliver the accessible M3 rival long envisioned for the Mustang, memories surface of the many sedans once available from various manufacturers. Ford has stepped away from sedans for now, yet it is not alone in reducing such offerings. Certain brands have never sold sedans in this market, including Hummer. A sedan from that lineup in an appropriate size would draw attention.

More sedan choices would expand options, but not every former model merits revival, particularly weaker entries. Trust in each automaker to deliver desirable sedans also varies. Some brands maintain more sedans in U.S. lineups than others. Toyota, for example, may not require additional sedans as a top priority.
