“Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing.” Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? It remains one of the most famous radio messages in modern Formula 1 history. It wasn’t just a heat-of-the-moment burst of frustration; it was a manifesto.

When Kimi ‘The Iceman’ Räikkönen quietly retired from driving at the close of 2021 after 352 Grands Prix and one World Championship title, the paddock bid farewell to one of its most genuine personalities.

While peers such as Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso keep competing at the elite level, Räikkönen opted to move ahead on his own path. He steered clear of roles as a broadcaster or sponsor representative. Instead, he followed his usual approach and stepped away completely on his own schedule. In reality, the Iceman looks entirely satisfied outside the Formula 1 environment.

To grasp Kimi’s current situation, it helps to recall the unusual nature of his earlier career. He arrived in the sport in 2001 as one of Formula 1’s boldest experiments, a 21-year-old with just 23 car races behind him, prompting the FIA to issue a temporary superlicence. In 2022, Räikkönen increased his commitment to the Kawasaki Racing Team in the FIM Motocross World Championship. Far from a mere promotional exercise, motocross had long been a personal interest he could seldom fully enjoy amid his packed Formula 1 obligations. By taking an active behind-the-scenes position, he exchanged the polished Grand Prix paddock for muddy tracks and day-to-day operations, mostly out of the public eye.

At ten years old, his son Robin Räikkönen is already attracting notice in the competitive European karting arena.
