The inspiration for this query stems from recent test vehicles: a 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV and a 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander. Despite appreciating the Bolt and holding some positive views on the Outlander, both exhibit a design choice that frustrates me. Why do manufacturers persist with non-leather materials featuring imitation leather textures?

This does not reflect disdain for economical interiors. Affordable vehicles can showcase creative styling, and not all surfaces require genuine leather. When using substitutes such as synthetic leather or fabrics, especially sustainable options, avoid applying poor grain patterns that fail to enhance the appearance or feel. Such efforts never succeed in mimicking real leather convincingly. Certain manufacturers, including GM, are shifting toward geometric designs or authentic materials, yielding superior results. The Outlander's material combination presents separate concerns to be addressed in the full evaluation.
